The Take It Down Act is bipartisan legislation headed to President Trump’s desk. It is meant to address the growing concern over AI-generated and non-consensual images.
Overview of the ‘Take It Down Act’
In a significant move to address the rising threat of non-consensual intimate imagery and AI-generated “deepfakes,” Congress has passed the Take It Down Act, a bipartisan bill that now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature.
The bill, supported across party lines, is a landmark step toward protecting victims of digital abuse and strengthening federal oversight of online platforms.
The new law makes it illegal to “knowingly publish” or threaten to publish intimate images without consent, including computer-generated deepfakes.
It also requires websites and social media platforms to remove the content within 48 hours of receiving notice from a victim and take action to prevent duplicate content from resurfacing.
“These images can ruin lives and reputations,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, one of the bill’s sponsors. “But now that our bipartisan legislation is becoming law, victims will be able to have this material removed from social media platforms and law enforcement can hold perpetrators accountable.”
