Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum, is calling the June 15 sabotage of its fiber optic network in Van Nuys an act of “domestic terrorism.”

The company said the attack severely disrupted critical services, including emergency dispatch, hospitals, police departments, and even a U.S. military base. Over 50,000 customers lost service for as long as 30 hours. The company condemned the attack as a National Security Threat.

Spectrum Vandalism is an Attack 

According to ABC7 News, vandals cut 13 major cables, severing more than 2,600 individual fibers and causing a significant communication breakdown across the region.

“These criminal attacks on our country’s vital communications networks are intentional and cause outages that put lives at risk,” said Chris Winfrey, President and CEO of Charter Communications.

Massive Disruption to Emergency and Essential Services

The outage affected:

• 911 and emergency dispatch systems
• Local fire and police departments
• Healthcare facilities and hospitals
• Court buildings and financial institutions
• Cell towers and mobile communication services
• Schools and educational institutions

Photos shared by Spectrum showed the precise cuts made to the cables, which many suspect were targeted for metal theft, though Spectrum’s fiber lines do not include copper.

“This is a pervasive and persistent threat… such life-threatening events should be declared acts of domestic terrorism and prosecuted accordingly,” Winfrey emphasized.

Law Enforcement Response and $25K Reward

Spectrum is working closely with the LAPD and offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee warned that these types of attacks pose “a significant threat to national security.”
