A Wildfire on the Utah-Colorado Border Killed Three Federal Firefighters

Federal wildland firefighters from the Bureau of Land Management prepare to deploy — three federal firefighters were killed battling wildfires on the Utah-Colorado border on June 28, 2026

The incident happened Saturday along the Utah-Colorado border, as the Snyder Wildfire exploded through Mesa County with winds that gave crews no time to escape. Three federal firefighters did not survive. Two others were taken to the hospital with burns.

They deployed their emergency fire shelters when the fire overtook their position.

No Escape Route. No Warning.

A burnover is one of the most feared events in wildland firefighting. It happens when a fire moves so fast and so unpredictably that a crew loses its escape route. When that happens, the last option is an emergency fire shelter firefighters carry as a last resort, designed to reflect heat and trap breathable air.

The firefighters were with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service. Their names have not been released, pending notification of their families.

The Snyder Fire started as the Snyder Mesa Fire in Grand County, Utah, before crossing into Colorado and merging with the smaller Jones and Knowles fires in Mesa County. By Saturday it had burned more than 28,000 acres and was 0% contained. Evacuation warnings were issued for smaller communities across Mesa County.

The Largest Wildfire in the Country Is Burning Right Now

Roughly 200 miles to the southwest, the Cottonwood Fire has been burning unchecked through Beaver County, Utah since June 22. As of this weekend it has consumed more than 92,000 acres. It is the largest active wildfire in the United States.

The fire has damaged Eagle Point ski resort and destroyed multiple cabins. Mandatory Level 3 "Go" evacuation orders are in effect for HiLo Estates, Merchant Valley, Eagle Point Resort, and Arrowhead Summer Homes.

The conditions driving both fires are extreme even by recent standards. Wind gusts around 45 miles per hour and fuel moisture readings between 2 and 8 percent, levels at which vegetation burns almost as fast as it can be reached. The National Weather Service issued a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" red flag warning over the Cottonwood Fire zone.

Utah Is Banning Fireworks for the Fourth of July

On Thursday, Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared a statewide emergency and banned all fireworks across Utah ahead of the July 4 holiday.

The order covers the entire state, not just the fire zones. In a region where fireworks ignite wildfires every summer, the governor made the call that this year, with these conditions, the risk is simply too high.

It will be the first July 4 in recent memory without legal fireworks anywhere in Utah.

What It Takes to Stop a Fire Like This

Both the Snyder Fire and the Cottonwood Fire are at 0% containment. That means no established perimeter, no line that the fire cannot cross. Crews are not yet in a position to stop either fire. They are managing them.

The conditions explain why. Wind gusts around 45 miles per hour push fire unpredictably across terrain, collapsing escape routes and making aerial support difficult to deploy safely. Humidity in the single digits removes any natural resistance from the landscape.

Wildland firefighters typically work toward containment by cutting firebreaks, backburning controlled sections ahead of the main fire, and using aircraft to drop retardant on advancing fronts. Under the current conditions, all three approaches carry higher risk and lower effectiveness.

Both fires remain active, more crews are responding. The next several days of weather will determine whether containment becomes possible.
