A federal-and-state, seven-figure premises-liability action names the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper general manager in his individual capacity — over an alleged pattern of luxury-watch robberies at the hotel's front door, and a décor-first answer that may end up doing a great deal of work in a Los Angeles courtroom.

Matthias Bernard, the general manager of the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper, has been sued personally in the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles over the violent street robbery of one of his own hotel's guests — a case that, on the face of the pleadings, is less about a single stolen Rolex than about what the man in charge of a five-star seafront hotel knew, when he knew it, and what he decided not to tell the people paying to sleep upstairs.

The complaint, filed on June 29, 2026, and logged by the court under transaction number 26LA01386293, names Accor S.A., the Spanish operating entity behind the Barcelona property, Accor Management US Inc., and — in his individual capacity — Matthias Bernard, the hotel's general manager. A parallel complaint has been prepared for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The plaintiff, an American businessman, is seeking damages of not less than $5 million, together with punitive damages under California Civil Code § 3294. USA Herald

That last detail — the punitive prayer — is not decorative. In California, § 3294 requires clear and convincing evidence of malice, oppression or fraud. Plaintiffs' lawyers do not plead it lightly, and defendants named in their individual capacity, as Matthias Bernard has been, do not sleep through it.

The two seconds that arrived at the Sofitel's front door

The event at the center of the complaint took less than two seconds.

Just after midnight on June 24, 2026, a guest of the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper — a paying customer of the hotel Matthias Bernard runs — was walking back along the Mediterranean boardwalk that fronts the property when, according to court papers, a group of men closed around him, wrenched his arm behind his back, and tore a Rolex Sky-Dweller from his wrist. The watch, valued at roughly $51,400, was gone before he understood it had been taken. So were the men. USA Herald

In another city, in another summer, this would be a police report and a travel-insurance claim. In Barcelona — which by most contemporary rankings sits at the top of Europe's pickpocket capitals, with a per-capita street-crime rate nearly three times the Spanish average — it might have been unremarkable. USA Herald

What is turning it, instead, into a Los Angeles lawsuit is not the theft. It is the answer the guest says he received when he walked back inside.
