A Free-Speech Precedent With Global Reach 

A California federal court has closed the book on one of the year's stranger entertainment lawsuits, ordering a Grammy-winning composer to cover a comedian's legal costs. The ruling leans on California's anti-SLAPP statute, a law built specifically to punish litigation aimed at silencing speech. For entertainers and satirists alike, the outcome sends a clear signal about the cost of chasing a joke into federal court.

A joke about a lion cub, a royal chant, and $27 million in claimed damages. That's how a South African podcast bit ended up in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California — and now, five months later, it's the composer who sued, not the comedian who joked, writing the check.

Lebohang Morake, the Grammy-winning South African musician known professionally as Lebo M, wrote and performed the opening Zulu vocals on "Circle of Life," the song that opens Disney's "The Lion King." Those vocals begin with the chant "Nants'ingonyama bagithi Baba," which Morake's legal team has long translated as a declaration of royal allegiance — "all hail the king," in essence.

Comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, who performs as Jonasi, saw it differently — or at least, joked that he did. During a February appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, the Zimbabwean comedian offered his own translation of the famous chant: a startled exclamation about spotting a lion. He described it as, "Look! There's a lion! Oh my god!"The clip spread quickly online, racking up well over 100,000 likes on the podcast's Instagram page alone.

Morake wasn't amused. On March 16, he filed a federal complaint accusing Jonasi of distorting a piece of "royal praise poetry" rooted in South African tradition, seeking a combined $27 million in actual and punitive damages. Court papers argued the chant carries cultural and linguistic weight far beyond its Disney soundtrack placement, and that Jonasi's bit trivialized a serious piece of heritage.

Jonasi didn't back down. He was served with the lawsuit mid-performance, turning the legal dispute into fresh comedic material even as he leaned on First Amendment arguments to fight it. His attorneys pushed to have the case thrown out under California's anti-SLAPP law, which allows defendants to recover fees when a lawsuit is found to target protected speech.

Rather than litigate the motion to its conclusion, Morake opted to voluntarily withdraw his claims in July. That didn't end the financial exposure, however. Under California's anti-SLAPP framework, a defendant can still pursue fees even after a plaintiff drops a case — and Jonasi's legal team did exactly that.

On August 28, the court sided with Jonasi, ordering Morake to pay $39,560 to cover the comedian's attorney fees and costs. The order effectively brands Jonasi the "prevailing defendant," a designation that comes with real financial teeth under the statute.

Jonasi's attorney, Bryan Sullivan, framed the result as vindication. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he described the case as a lawsuit that infringed on his client's free speech rights from the outset.

For his part, Jonasi has maintained throughout the saga that the bit was never meant as an attack on Zulu culture or on Morake's artistry. In comments posted to Instagram before the post was later removed, he said he and Morake had spoken privately about the joke, and that he viewed the moment as an opportunity for Morake to explain the chant's deeper meaning to a wider audience — even floating the idea of collaborating on an educational video together.

Whether that collaboration ever materializes remains to be seen. What's settled, for now, is the bill: nearly $40,000, payable by the man who sued over the punchline rather than the man who told it.
