FLORIDA - Tiger Woods has avoided a DUI conviction—but the legendary golfer will not be permitted to drive for the next five years under a plea agreement that brought his closely watched Florida criminal case to an abrupt end.

Woods, 50, appeared Wednesday morning before Martin County Judge Darren Steele at the courthouse in Stuart, Florida, where prosecutors and defense attorney Douglas Duncan announced that they had reached an agreement.

The 15-time major champion pleaded no contest to willful and wanton reckless driving after prosecutors reduced the original charge of driving under the influence with property damage. Woods also entered a no-contest plea to refusing to submit to a lawful drug test.

Although a no-contest plea does not amount to an express admission of guilt, it permits the court to enter a judgment and impose a sentence as though the defendant had been convicted after trial.

Judge Steele adjudicated Woods guilty of reckless driving and imposed a $1,000 fine. Woods received an additional $500 fine for refusing the drug test. Court records reviewed by The Guardian reportedly show that Woods paid $2,131.44 in combined fines and court costs.

More consequentially, Woods received two five-year driver’s-license suspensions that will run concurrently, meaning he will remain unable to drive for five years rather than serving the suspensions consecutively.

The agreement also prevents Woods from seeking a hardship exemption that could otherwise allow limited driving for approved purposes.

“There are no exceptions. If you were to drive for any reason at all, you would go immediately back to jail,” Steele warned during the hearing, according to Reuters.

Woods has 30 days to appeal the ruling.

The case arose from a March 27 rollover crash near Woods’ Jupiter Island residence.

Authorities said Woods was driving a Land Rover on a narrow two-lane road when he approached a truck towing a pressure-washing trailer. The truck had slowed to turn into a driveway when Woods attempted to pass it.

Woods’ SUV clipped the trailer, left the roadway and overturned onto its driver’s side. Woods, who was alone, escaped through the passenger side without suffering serious injuries. The truck and trailer sustained approximately $5,000 in damage.

Woods reportedly told investigators that he had been looking at his cellphone and attempting to adjust the radio when he failed to recognize that the vehicle ahead of him had slowed.

Deputies nevertheless began an impairment investigation after allegedly observing that Woods appeared lethargic, moved slowly, was sweating heavily and had bloodshot, glassy eyes with significantly dilated pupils.

A breath test detected no alcohol. Woods, however, refused to provide a urine sample that could have been tested for drugs.

Deputies also recovered two loose pills from Woods’ pocket that were subsequently identified as hydrocodone. Woods told investigators that he had taken several medications earlier that day, including the prescription painkiller Vicodin, ibuprofen and medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol.

The Florida court later authorized prosecutors to obtain certain prescription and hospital records connected to the crash and Woods’ medical treatment.

Woods initially pleaded not guilty to DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. His defense requested a jury trial, setting the stage for prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Woods was operating the vehicle while impaired.

The absence of alcohol did not automatically defeat the DUI allegation because Florida law also permits prosecution when a driver is allegedly impaired by controlled substances or certain chemical substances.

However, proving drug impairment can become more difficult when authorities do not obtain a timely blood or urine sample. The prosecution would have been left to rely heavily on deputies’ observations, field-sobriety evidence, Woods’ statements, the pills recovered from him and any admissible medical or prescription records.

The negotiated resolution gave both sides certainty. Prosecutors secured convictions, substantial driving restrictions and financial penalties, while Woods avoided the possibility of a DUI conviction following a public trial.

Four days after his arrest, Woods announced that he was stepping away from professional obligations to focus on his health and pursue treatment.

A judge subsequently permitted him to travel abroad for an inpatient rehabilitation program. Woods spent several weeks receiving treatment in Switzerland before gradually returning to public life.

His girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, accompanied him to Wednesday’s hearing. The couple arrived together in a black SUV and entered the courthouse without addressing reporters.

The Florida crash added another chapter to Woods’ troubled history behind the wheel. In 2017, police found him asleep in a damaged vehicle and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. He later attributed that incident to an unexpected reaction involving prescription medications and pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

Woods was also seriously injured in a high-speed rollover crash outside Los Angeles in 2021, suffering devastating injuries to his right leg and ankle.

His latest plea agreement closes the criminal case without a DUI conviction, but the five-year suspension represents a sweeping restriction. For one of professional golf’s most celebrated figures, the judge’s message was unmistakable: Woods may have negotiated a reduced charge, but violating the court’s driving prohibition could carry immediate consequences.
