Mead Industries Inc., a Wood River, Nebraska-based manufacturer known for precision hunting bullets and the machinery that produces them, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 2 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nebraska.

It's a striking turn for a company that has spent nearly four decades supplying the machinery, equipment, and components that keep some of the world's biggest ammunition makers running. According to the company's own website, founder Greg Mead — a lifelong hunter — built the business in 1977 around a simple premise: precision matters. That reputation helped the company's 15,000-square-foot Wood River facility, complete with an on-site ballistics lab, welding shop, and full machine shop, become a quiet but essential cog in an industry capable of turning out more than 50 million bullets a month.

Court filings paint a picture of a company caught in a financial squeeze rather than one collapsing outright. Mead Industries listed over $7.1 million in assets against more than $6.4 million in debts — numbers that suggest a reorganization, not a liquidation, is the goal. Still, the debt load tells its own story. The company's largest creditor is Kentucky's Best Hemp Inc., owed more than $1.85 million stemming from a disputed lawsuit claim.

Behind that sits Hiawatha National Bank at over $1.3 million and FNBO at more than $544,000. Gunwerks LLC, a well-known name in long-range rifle circles, is owed $346,000 tied to a contract dispute. Notably, founder Greg Mead himself appears on the creditor list, owed over $521,000 on a promissory note — a detail that hints at just how personally invested he's been in keeping the company afloat. AMDG Enterprises rounds out the major creditors at more than $304,000.

The bankruptcy filing didn't emerge from nowhere. Mead Industries' revenue has been sliding hard for three straight years, falling from over $2.4 million in 2024 to just over $1.3 million in 2025. By the time the company filed its petition on September 2 of this year, it had generated a little over $1.1 million.

That trajectory mirrors what's happening across the broader firearms market. Nationally, firearms sales dropped 4.1% in 2025 to roughly 14.6 million units, down from 15.2 million the year before, according to figures from the National Shooting Sports Foundation reported by the NRA's American Rifleman. The slide hasn't let up in 2026 either — new firearm unit sales fell 7.6% year over year in the first quarter, with revenue down 2.6% even as average selling prices climbed 5.4%, according to Tactical Wire.

The second quarter brought more of the same, though the picture grew more nuanced. Total firearms unit sales fell 3.8% year over year, and dealers trimmed inventory by 9.2% overall, according to Gearfire's RetailBI Q2 2026 Shooting Sports report. Rifles took the biggest inventory hit at 12.3%, followed by shotguns at 9.4% and handguns at 7.7%. Yet within that downturn, rifle sales actually grew 8.1%, even as handgun sales slipped 5.6% and shotgun sales cratered 17%. Revenue, somewhat counterintuitively, rose 4.5% because the average firearm sold for 8.7% more than the year before.

The takeaway from the report is one that's becoming familiar across consumer goods generally: buyers are spending less often, but spending more when they do, gravitating toward premium rifles and handguns rather than entry-level models.

Mead Industries is far from alone in seeking bankruptcy protection this year. Firearms and ammunition retailer White Oak Armory LLC filed for Chapter 11 on August 24, citing a disputed tax debt owed to the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Hutco Corporation, which operates the Delta Hawk Sportsman Gun & Pawn chain, filed on July 10 while contending with multiple civil claims. And Custombilt Firearms Manufacturing LLC filed back on February 8 after a protracted licensing dispute with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives that dated back to 2023 and 2024.

Taken together, the filings suggest an industry navigating a genuine structural shift — one where softening overall demand, rising input costs, and a consumer base gravitating toward fewer, pricier purchases are reshaping who survives and who doesn't. For a company like Mead Industries, whose machinery quietly underpins so much of the ammunition supply chain, the coming months in bankruptcy court will determine whether reorganization can restore its footing, or whether the pressures squeezing the broader industry prove too much.
