Second “Dan Sullivan” on the Ballot? Alaska Orders Criminal Probe as Trump Demands Peltola Be Pulled and Prosecuted

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A political firestorm is engulfing one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country after The New York Times reported that operatives linked to Democrat Mary Peltola's campaign recruited a second candidate named Dan Sullivan, a retired teacher, to siphon votes from Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. Alaska's governor has ordered a criminal investigation, Peltola and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee deny the report, and President Donald Trump has demanded that Peltola be removed from the ballot and prosecuted.

With Election Day days away, the allegations have turned a competitive Senate contest into a national fight over election integrity, ballot access and the limits of presidential power.

What the Report Alleges

According to the Times account, operatives connected to the Peltola campaign recruited a retired teacher, identified as Dan J. Sullivan, to appear on the ballot with a name identical to the Republican senator's. The theory behind such a tactic is simple: in a close race, voters who glance at a crowded ballot may confuse the two names, peeling off support from the incumbent and tilting the outcome. Name-alike candidates have a long and controversial history in American politics, and election officials in several states have dealt with similar schemes over the years.

Peltola and the DSCC deny the report. Those denials are significant because the central allegation, that her campaign or its associates orchestrated the recruitment, has not been proven in a court of law, and a criminal investigation is only now getting underway. Readers should distinguish between what has been reported and what has been established.

Governor Orders a Criminal Investigation

Alaska's governor responded by ordering a criminal investigation into the matter. That step moves the dispute out of the realm of campaign rhetoric and into the machinery of law enforcement, where questions of intent, coordination and state election law will have to be answered with evidence. Investigations of this type can take time, and it is unclear whether any findings will arrive before ballots are counted.

The key legal questions will likely include whether anyone connected to the campaign directed or paid for the candidacy, whether the retired teacher knew the purpose of his filing, and whether any conduct violated Alaska's election statutes. Merely sharing a name with an incumbent is not illegal; what matters is whether there was a coordinated effort to deceive voters.

Trump Demands Removal and Prosecution

President Trump escalated the dispute dramatically. He called for Peltola to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted, and he ordered the Department of Justice to block certification of the race if Sullivan loses. That instruction is extraordinary. Certification of election results is governed by state law and carried out by state officials, and the federal government has no clear constitutional role in halting it. Legal experts across the spectrum have long held that the president cannot unilaterally stop a state from certifying its own results.

Republicans have seized on the controversy, as PBS NewsHour noted in its coverage of the race, framing it as evidence of Democratic willingness to manipulate the process. Democrats counter that the allegations remain unproven and that the president's response threatens to politicize the administration of an election he has a direct stake in.

The Practical Problem: Ballots Are Already Printed

Even if the allegations were fully substantiated, removing a candidate from the ballot this late in the process presents enormous practical hurdles. Ballots have been printed and mailed, and early voting is well underway. Courts are generally reluctant to order sweeping changes to a ballot in the final days before an election, because of the risk of confusing voters and disenfranchising those who have already voted.

Alaska uses ranked-choice voting in its general elections, which adds another layer of complexity for any analysis of how a name-alike candidate could affect the result. How votes for a lesser-known candidate are redistributed depends on voters' rankings, and the precise impact of a second Dan Sullivan on the ballot is difficult to predict.

What It Means for Voters

The episode lands at a moment when public trust in elections is already strained. For Alaska voters, the immediate message is practical: read the ballot carefully and confirm which candidate you are marking. For voters nationwide, the dispute is a test of how institutions respond to allegations of election interference when the accused and the accuser are both fighting for power.

The outcome of the Alaska Senate race could help determine control of the chamber, which means the stakes extend well beyond one state. A close result, combined with a presidential directive to block certification, sets up the possibility of a protracted legal battle after November 3.

What to Watch

The next developments to follow include whether the governor's investigation produces any early findings, whether Peltola or the DSCC release documents responding to the Times report, whether any court is asked to intervene on ballot access, and how state and federal officials respond to the president's directive on certification. USA Herald will continue to monitor the investigation and the race as it develops.
