  1. California Earthquake, Tsunami Warning:0 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Northern California, a new concern emerges for California residents
  2. Risk Assessment: Insurance companies may use this event to reassess the risk of tsunamis, much like they did with wildfires, potentially impacting policyholders.
  3. Homeowner Concerns: California homeowners are now facing the dual threat of natural disasters and rising insurance costs.

[CALIFORNIA] 1:50 PM PST - A massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California, triggering tsunami warnings for areas in both California and Oregon2. The initial magnitude was measured at 6.6 but was later upgraded to 7.0 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). A second earthquake, measuring 5.8, struck near Ferndale shortly after.

The first earthquake hit around 10:45 a.m. in Petrolia, approximately 50 miles from Eureka. The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning along the California and Oregon coast, from Santa Cruz to the Douglas/Lane Line in Oregon.

Residents in the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, received emergency alerts and text messages warning of an impending tsunami.

While no immediate damage reports have surfaced from Humboldt and Mendocino counties, the potential for significant impact remains high. This event has not only rattled the physical landscape but also the insurance landscape.

From Wildfires to Waves: The Insurance Playbook

In recent years, we’ve watched as California’s insurance industry used the increased frequency and intensity of wildfires to justify skyrocketing premiums—or outright policy cancellations. Some insurers even pulled out of high-risk regions altogether, leaving homeowners scrambling for alternatives.

Now, with tsunami warnings grabbing headlines, could insurers make a similar argument for coastal areas? The parallels are striking. Both wildfires and tsunamis present unpredictable yet devastating risks. Both can lead to catastrophic loss of life and property. And both can be leveraged by insurance companies as justification for higher premiums, stricter underwriting guidelines, and fewer policy options.

As someone with over 20 years in the legal and insurance industries, I’ve seen this strategy before. It starts with a narrative—one built on fear, unpredictability, and catastrophic "what-ifs." From there, it evolves into policy adjustments, pricing changes, and reduced coverage.

For California homeowners, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Take, for example, Humboldt County residents who live just miles from the quake's epicenter. Many of them have already been grappling with the challenges of securing fire insurance. Now, they face the possibility of being labeled high-risk for tsunamis as well.

Let me be clear: the science of tsunami risk is complex. While large earthquakes like today’s can trigger tsunamis, not all quakes do. The Petrolia quake, for instance, wasn’t on the Cascadia Subduction Zone—the fault line most likely to generate a tsunami. But that nuance might be lost on insurance companies eager to shore up their bottom lines.

If insurers start lumping tsunamis into the same risk category as earthquakes and wildfires, we could see premiums rise not just for coastal properties but for homes miles inland.

This raises an important question: How much risk should homeowners bear versus what insurers take on? California’s Department of Insurance will undoubtedly face pressure to step in if insurers use the tsunami threat as a blanket excuse to hike rates or exit markets.

But state regulators have their hands full. Earlier this year, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced stricter oversight of wildfire insurance practices. Expanding those regulations to include tsunami risks would be an uphill battle.

Today’s earthquake serves as a critical wake-up call—not just for emergency preparedness but for conversations about insurance fairness and accessibility. California homeowners deserve better than a knee-jerk reaction that drives them into financial uncertainty.

“Insurance is meant to provide peace of mind, not exacerbate fear. Yet, without proper checks and balances, it risks becoming another wave that Californians are forced to ride.” – Samuel A. Lopez, Legal Analyst and Journalist, USA Herald
