The mayor of Arcadia, California, has resigned in disgrace after the U.S. Department of Justice charged her with acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government.

Eileen Wang, 58, agreed to plead guilty to one felony count and stepped down from her position on Monday. She now faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

Wang’s attorneys said she “apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life,” while emphasizing her continued love for the Arcadia community.

Allegations of covert Influence

According to the DOJ, Wang followed directions from Chinese officials, including sharing pre-written propaganda articles favorable to Beijing on a local news website she helped operate — all without disclosing her actions to the U.S. government as required by law.

One example cited by prosecutors involved a Chinese official sending her an article via WeChat denying human rights abuses in Xinjiang. Wang allegedly posted it shortly afterward.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli described the case as another success in protecting American institutions from Chinese infiltration:

“Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy.”

This stunning case raises deeply troubling questions about foreign influence at the local level of American government. A sitting mayor — even in a rotating position — allegedly working as an unregistered agent for China represents a significant breach of public trust.

Arcadia, a city in Southern California with a large Chinese-American population, now finds itself at the center of a national security scandal. City officials were quick to stress that no public funds, staff, or decision-making were compromised, and the alleged conduct stopped after Wang took office in late 2022.

Still, the episode exposes vulnerabilities in how foreign powers, particularly China, attempt to exert soft influence through community leaders, media outlets, and local politics.
The fact that Wang operated a website targeting Chinese-Americans while allegedly taking direction from Beijing adds another layer of concern.

As Wang prepares to face sentencing, her case serves as a stark warning: even small-town politics are not immune from great power competition.
American democracy requires constant vigilance against covert foreign interference — no matter how subtle or local it appears.
