Two Companies and Ship Official Criminally Charged in Deadly Baltimore Bridge Collapse That Killed 6

Baltimore Bridge collapse

Nearly two years after the container ship Dali slammed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, killing six highway workers and crippling one of America’s busiest ports, the Justice Department has finally filed criminal charges against two shipping companies and the vessel’s technical superintendent.

Synergy Marine Pte Ltd (Singapore), Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd (India), and 47-year-old Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair face serious charges including conspiracy, willfully failing to notify the Coast Guard of hazardous conditions, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and false statements.

Allegations of Corner-Cutting and Cover-Ups

Federal prosecutors allege the companies and Nair repeatedly cut safety corners on the Dali, falsified safety inspections and certifications, and then lied to investigators after the disaster. The indictment claims the ship was improperly modified to rely on a flushing pump for fuel to its generators — a setup that failed during a blackout, contributing to the vessel losing power and striking the bridge.

U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes stated at a press conference that those responsible “deliberately cut corners at the expense of safety.”

Nair, an Indian national, is believed to be in India. Authorities say they will use every tool available to bring him to justice.

The Real Story

This criminal case represents a major escalation in accountability for one of the most catastrophic maritime disasters in modern U.S. history. The collapse not only claimed six lives but caused billions in economic damage and disrupted global supply chains for months.

While the companies strongly dispute the charges and point to a loose electrical wire as the root cause (per the NTSB report), prosecutors argue the crew and shore-side managers created and then concealed dangerous conditions aboard the vessel.

The timing of the indictment — coming just weeks before a major civil trial — has also raised eyebrows, with Synergy accusing the Justice Department of ignoring expert findings.

For the families of the six men who died while repairing potholes on the bridge that tragic morning, these charges may finally deliver a sense of justice. Yet many questions remain about how a massive ship was allowed to operate with known safety issues in the first place.

The case serves as a stark warning to the shipping industry: cutting corners on safety can have deadly — and now criminal — consequences.
