Danny Serafini, 49, who once graced the diamond for six Major League Baseball teams, finds himself entangled in a gruesome murder case. The ex-MLB pitcher was arrested in the Reno area. His alleged accomplice Samantha Scott, 33, was arrested in Las Vegas.

The two suspects were taken into custody after a two-year investigation by the Placer County Sheriff's Office. 

The Sheriff's Office confirmed that both Serafini and Scott would be extradited to California to face charges related to the crime.

The murder took place at a home in an unincorporated community in California off the shore of Lake Tahoe. Robert Spohr, 70, was shot to death and his wife, Wendy Wood, 68, was left in critical condition.

Ex-MLB Pitcher 

Danny Serafini's journey from the pitching mound to the courtroom is marked by his stellar career as a left-handed pitcher. He was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins in 1992. 

Serafini spent three seasons with the Twins. He also donned the jerseys of the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds before concluding his career with the Colorado Rockies in 2007. 

Throughout his career, Serafini played in 104 games, accumulating a record of 15 wins and 16 losses with a 6.04 earned run average.

 The San Francisco Chronicle highlighted that Serafini had family connections to the Spohrs. He was married to their daughter Erin and they owned a Nevada bar that gained notoriety after its appearance on the television show "Bar Rescue" in 2015, although it eventually closed its doors.

The Crime

Surveillance footage from the Spohr and Wood residence provided crucial evidence, depicting a hooded man with a face covering and a backpack approaching the home hours before the attack. Police contend that Serafina is that man. Another video shows the same individual walking up the driveway, further corroborating the authorities' case.

After they were shot Wendy Wood was able to call 911. Sadly, Wood, unable to cope with the loss of her husband, Robert Spohr, ultimately took her own life.

Their daughter, Adrienne Spohr, said that the overwhelming impact of this tragedy on her mother was responsible for the suicide. And "She couldn't handle it, the loss. She missed my dad like crazy. It was like the killer killed her too. When we bring that person to justice, I certainly hope they are held accountable for both deaths. They are very much responsible for both."

 Sheriff Wayne Woo spoke after the arrests saying, "Today, justice was served. The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth."
