In a case that crackles with political tension, James Comey surrender headlines emerged Wednesday as the former FBI director briefly appeared in court following a fresh indictment tied to a controversial social media post.

Indictment Over Viral Seashell Post

Federal prosecutors charged James Comey in North Carolina over a photograph he shared last year showing seashells arranged to read “86 47.”

According to the Justice Department, the message could be interpreted by a reasonable person as a threat against Donald Trump, framing it as a “serious expression of intent to do harm.”

The image, simple at first glance, has now become the centerpiece of a high-stakes legal clash — a symbol transformed into evidence.

Comey Pushes Back: “I Am Still Innocent”

Comey swiftly rejected the allegations.

In a video posted to his Substack, he addressed the charges directly, insisting that nothing about his actions had changed.

“They’re back,” he said, referring to renewed legal efforts against him. “I am still innocent. I am still not afraid.”

He explained that he believed the numbers carried a political meaning, not a call to violence. Once he realized others interpreted it differently, he removed the post, emphasizing his opposition to violence in any form.

A Pattern of Legal Battles

This marks the second time the Justice Department has pursued charges against Comey.

Last year, he was indicted on allegations of lying to Congress. However, that case collapsed when a judge ruled the prosecutor had been improperly appointed, effectively dismissing the charges.

The latest indictment revives a long-running feud that stretches back years.

Longstanding Clash With Trump

Comey’s conflict with Trump dates to his tenure leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation, when he oversaw an investigation into alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

In 2017, Trump fired Comey just four years into his 10-year term — a decision that ignited political controversy and cemented their rivalry.

Since then, Trump and his allies have repeatedly called for legal action against Comey, viewing him as a political adversary.

Renewed Pressure From Justice Department

The current case unfolds amid broader efforts by Trump’s Justice Department to target perceived political opponents.

After expressing frustration over a lack of prosecutions, Trump recently removed his attorney general and elevated acting leadership that quickly reignited investigations into figures like Comey and former CIA director John Brennan.

The Justice Department had also previously brought charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James, though that case was dismissed on similar legal grounds.
