A routine descent turned into a moment of high-altitude uncertainty as a United Airlines plane hits drone scare unfolded just before landing, raising fresh concerns about airborne safety near major airports.

Midair Sighting Sparks Alarm

According to officials, the crew of United Airlines Flight 1980 reported a possible collision with an unidentified object while approaching San Diego International Airport.

The flight, traveling from San Francisco to San Diego, was nearing the end of its journey when the pilot alerted dispatchers that the aircraft may have struck what appeared to be a drone at roughly 3,000 feet.

In cockpit audio, the pilot described the object as “red” and “shiny,” a fleeting flash in the sky that raised immediate concern — like spotting a spark in the path of a moving train.

Conflicting Details on Altitude and Object

The Federal Aviation Administration provided additional context, noting that the crew had reported seeing a drone approximately 1,000 feet below the aircraft while descending at about 4,000 feet.
