During the holiday seasons, it's not uncommon to see upticks in travel. Many people want to venture out, make the most of their time off, and otherwise enjoy themselves.

This is especially true of Memorial Day. Not only is this a federal holiday, but it also comes as the summer months approach. Travel correspondingly tends to increase during the summer.

However, as many Americans know, airlines have been having some severe issues since 2020. Air travel companies sought bailouts from the federal government in 2020 when travel largely ceased.

Yet, even as travelers are now pouring into airports, airlines remain saddled with difficulties. These difficulties include pilot shortages, inclement weather, and more.

Unfortunately, this created a situation where thousands of flights were cancelled during Memorial Day weekend.

What to know about travel issues during Memorial Day weekend

Between Saturday and Sunday, thousands of flights were either grounded altogether or delayed. The majority of flights with these issues were domestic; although, international travelers didn't completely escape flight problems, either.

Of all airlines, Delta experienced the most problems with its flight operations. A high level of flight delay/cancellation reports stemmed from the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia as well.

Thus far, issues with air travel reportedly boil down to staffing insufficiencies, complications with air traffic control, and poor weather.

Outrage from US travelers and more

Americans forced to endure issues with their flights made their outrage known on social media. Some folks even ended up switching airlines in order to reach their intended destinations.

However, others ran into additional complications. Delays and cancellations cause serious concerns for people wanting to reach certain places on tight schedules. Travelers blasted airlines via social media for not providing the appropriate rebooking accommodations.

With the summer season steadily approaching, travel rates remain set to keep increasing. This will put airline companies under even more pressure to keep up with rising demands.

Last year, countless flight delays and cancellations frustrated Americans, notably during peak travel seasons. As people make their plans for the rest of the year, there's a hope that air travel won't come with too many complications.
