A Milwaukee criminal court has sentenced longtime attorney Robert L. Taylor, 79, to 21 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in 2022—a case that began with an emergency call for medical help and culminated in a sweeping felony conviction.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Laura Crivello also ordered Taylor to serve 15 years of extended supervision after any eventual release from prison and credited him with 82 days already served. The July 24 sentence followed a May 8 verdict finding Taylor guilty of three counts of second-degree sexual assault with domestic-abuse modifiers and two felony bail-jumping counts. Wisconsin Law Journal

The survivor told the court that Taylor repeatedly choked her during what she described as a violent rape. She said she continues to live with post-traumatic stress and fears threats connected to the case, according to contemporaneous sentencing coverage. Judge Crivello, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, pointed to what she viewed as an escalating pattern of abuse in explaining the lengthy prison term.

The underlying allegations were first reported in December 2022. According to the criminal complaint, a woman called 911 seeking transport to a hospital. A man on the call identified himself as “Attorney Robert Taylor” and told the operator the woman had migraine and possible stroke symptoms, while also asserting that “she’s fine,” the complaint states.

The woman nevertheless confirmed that she wanted medical assistance. At the hospital, she disclosed that Taylor had sexually abused her. Medical personnel documented injuries consistent with an assault, according to the charging record.

Her account to police alleged two separate assaults: one at a hotel while the pair was returning to Wisconsin from an out-of-state property visit, followed by another at Taylor’s Milwaukee apartment. The complaint further alleged that Taylor threatened to kill her before the second assault. Those allegations were tested through the criminal process and ultimately resulted in the jury’s guilty verdict.

Taylor denied wrongdoing in court and in a written statement, reportedly claiming that other attorneys fabricated the allegations against him. But the jury’s verdict establishes criminal liability unless and until it is overturned through post-conviction proceedings or appeal.

The sentence underscores the legal significance of the evidence that followed the 911 call. In sexual-assault prosecutions, emergency recordings, prompt disclosures, medical findings, witness testimony and the consistency of a complainant’s account can each become central issues for jurors. Here, the court imposed not only a substantial prison term, but a lengthy period of extended supervision designed to follow Taylor after incarceration.

Under Wisconsin’s bifurcated sentencing structure, extended supervision is not a symbolic add-on. A defendant released from confinement remains subject to supervision conditions and can face serious consequences for violations.

For the survivor, Friday’s hearing marked the legal conclusion of a case that began with a plea for medical help nearly four years ago. For the Milwaukee legal community, it is also a stark reminder that professional status offers no exemption from criminal accountability.
