Last month, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) repeatedly stated he wants to protect the Dreamers. He plans to address DACA this month. He said, “We clearly need to address this issue in March; I’ll just leave it at that.”
Federal courts ordered Trump administration to maintain DACA
Last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end DACA on March 5. However, a group of 17 attorney generals led by New York AG Eric Schneiderman filed a lawsuit challenging his decision.
In January, the district court in Northern California ordered a nationwide preliminary injunction to stop the President’s decision. In February, the district court in Eastern New York issued a similar ruling. The judges ordered the Trump administration to maintain the DACA program.
Late last month, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the Trump administration’s appeal regarding DACA.
Take note that Pres. Trump wants Congress to fix DACA. He even stated that a legislative solution for the program should be a “bill of love.” The President also supports pathway to citizenship for Dreamers in exchange for $25 billion funding for border security.
