Philly Motels Reach $17.5M Settlement in Shocking Sex Trafficking Case

Philly Motels $17.5M settlement

In a landmark settlement, three Philadelphia motels accused of allowing the trafficking of minors into prostitution have agreed to pay $17.5 million to three women who alleged they were exploited on the properties. The settlement, finalized late Thursday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, brings an end to a lawsuit that accused the motels of negligence, failing to implement proper security measures, and ignoring blatant signs of criminal activity.

The case targeted the owners of Motel 6, Days Inn, and North American Motor Inn, marking a pivotal moment in the legal fight against businesses accused of facilitating sex trafficking.

A Systemic Failure: Negligence, Lax Security, and Missed Red Flags

The lawsuit, filed by survivors identified as T.S., B.S., and D.T., detailed harrowing allegations of neglect. According to the complaint, the motels overlooked obvious indicators of sex trafficking, including:

  • Guests renting adjacent rooms under different names
  • Housekeeping services being declined for extended stays
  • Large amounts of cash exchanged in plain sight
  • Physical injuries on female guests displaying signs of fear and anxiety
  • Excessive condom wrappers found in rooms

Rather than taking action, the plaintiffs argued, the motels failed to hire qualified security, enforce policies against criminal activity, or train staff to recognize and report trafficking-related behavior.

"It’s deeply disturbing that children were being raped and trafficked in these motels while ownership stood idly by," said Nadeem Bezar, an attorney from Kline & Specter PC, representing the plaintiffs.

Pattern of Abuse: Multi-Million-Dollar Judgments Mount Against Motel Operators

This settlement is just one in a series of legal blows against these motel operators. Ramara Inc., which operates the North American Motor Inn, was previously ordered to pay a $24.5 million arbitration award in February 2024 for a similar case.

In that instance, two women—identified as B.H. and C.A.—alleged they were trafficked at the motel as minors and were forced to meet daily quotas of $2,000 to $3,000. If they failed, they suffered violent abuse.

C.A. further claimed in court filings that she was threatened with the murder of her family if she resisted.

Additionally, in 2023, an arbitrator awarded three other women $37.5 million in lawsuits against Ramara, further highlighting a disturbing trend of motel negligence in Philadelphia.

Legal Teams Stay Silent as Motels Face Fallout

Despite the growing legal consequences, attorneys representing the defendants—Eighty Eight LP, 4200 Rose Hospitality, 4200 Roosevelt LLC, and Ramara Inc.—have remained tight-lipped.

The defendants are represented by:

  • Philip Priore, Conrad Benedetto, and Susan Keesler of McCormick & Priore PC (Motel 6, Days Inn, and North American Motor Inn operators)
  • Brad Wanner of Harris Beach Murtha PLLC (representing Ramara Inc.)

With settlements and arbitration awards stacking up, the question now remains: Will these legal battles force the hospitality industry to finally take responsibility for its role in preventing sex trafficking?
