Throughout the 2016 presidential election, immigration reform served as the benchmark of then-candidate Trump’s campaign. In order to halt unlawful entry into America, Trump vowed to build a wall along the Southern border. With merely weeks left until 2019, the president is pushing for Congress to grant the appropriate, necessary funds to build the wall.
According to The Hill, President Trump may be willing to allow a government shutdown if Congress fails to provide the aforementioned funding. Moreover, December 7, 2018 is the current deadline for Congressional members to provide government funding. Whether or not that will include capital for the Southern border wall remains unknown. However, Congressional Democrats are heavily averse to the idea of constructing a wall.
The Thoughts of the People
While lawmakers battle one another over immigration and other policy matters, civilians have their own thoughts. As fitting to current partisanship values, left-wingers are likelier to support more relaxed immigration laws and practices. Conversely, Americans who lean right generally support lawful and merit-based immigration.
