Skywatchers: April 8 Brings the Dragon Eclipse of the Sun

The Dragon Eclipse

On April 8 a rare total solar eclipse can be seen in most parts of the US. This phenomenon is known as Dragon Eclipse.

The shadow of the moon will plunge parts of the earth into darkness in the middle of daylight hours.

The 2024 total eclipse, is also known as the "Great North American Eclipse.” It will be 20 years till we see another one.

It will be an astronomical experience that will be accessible to millions of people.

According to NASA estimates around 215 million adults in the U.S. saw the 2017 solar eclipse either in person or online. And millions more will see this April's sky event.

The path of totality for the latest eclipse will pass over cities like Dallas, Cleveland, Buffalo, and New York. And sky gazers from all over the country will travel to view the event.

Dragon Eclipse History

According to a NASA post the ancient Chinese and Incas saw the phenomenon as "... a dragon, or a demon, who devours the Sun."

In ancient times, a total solar eclipse generated fear. People thought the world would end or evil would spread throughout the path of the eclipse.

Some of the myths involve a beast like a dragon trying to destroy the Sun with the fate of Earth in question.

Chippewa people would shoot flaming arrows into the sky to try to rekindle the Sun. And the tribes in Peru shot flaming arrows to scare off the beast they believed was attacking the Sun.

According to Norse culture, the gods put an evil trickster, Loki, into chains. Loki got revenge by creating wolflike giants.

Legend has it that one of these monsters ate the Sun. And that caused an eclipse. Another of the giant wolves is said to be still chasing the Moon.

Total Solar Eclipse

Because of sky positionings, the moon won't totally block out the sun during this eclipse. It will leave a bright halo of light exposed around the edges of the Sun. This is commonly known as a "Ring of Fire."

You need to wear eclipse safety glasses to protect your eyes during the entire time the event is in play.

Expect a drop in temperature as the Earth darkens in the eclipse path.

Experts claim that animals, insects and birds may react as if it were twilight or dawn.

The current eclipse prompts some public safety concerns. Fear of travel delays and traffic-jammed highways are an issue. People may even pull off the road or stop when the eclipse becomes visible.

"The eclipse in 2024 could be even more exciting due to differences in the path, timing, and scientific research," according to NASA.

The next total solar eclipse crossing over the U.S. will come on Aug. 23, 2044. And it will only touch the states of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
