The traditional definition refers to the third full moon in a season that contains four full moons. The second definition, which emerged from a misunderstanding, refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month. The Blue Moon on August 19, 2024, will be of the traditional seasonal variety.

Though the moon will not actually turn blue, the rarity of the event makes it special. The combination of a Supermoon and a Blue Moon is an even more unusual occurrence, making this August’s full moon a must-see event.
