Aguirre, a critical care registered nurse, is a passionate advocate for crime victims. She testified before Congress last year about crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. She holds a degree in criminal justice from the University of Houston-Downtown and plans to begin law school later this year.

Under the Texas Constitution, the Commission on Judicial Conduct’s mission is to protect the public and promote confidence in the judiciary’s integrity, independence, competence, and impartiality. The commission is authorized to recommend disciplinary actions for judges, including censure, suspension, or removal.

Abbott’s appointment of Weiss and Aguirre adds to the commission, which is composed of five citizen members appointed by the governor, six judges selected by the Supreme Court of Texas, and two non-judge attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Texas.

The commission is currently chaired by 274th District Judge Gary L. Steel, whose appointment began in late 2023. All appointments to the commission are subject to confirmation by the Texas Senate.
