President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the first visit to China by a sitting U.S. president in nearly ten years, as he seeks to restore American leverage weakened by the ongoing war with Iran.

Trump was greeted with a grand welcome: descending Air Force One to a red carpet lined with 300 young Chinese waving flags and chanting. He was received by Vice President Han Zheng and other senior officials, complete with a military band and honor guard. The president was joined by his son Eric, daughter-in-law Lara, and a powerful delegation of American tech leaders, including Elon Musk of Tesla and Jensen Huang of Nvidia.

Trump had previously predicted that Chinese President Xi Jinping would “give me a big, fat hug” upon his arrival. However, the shadow of the Iran conflict — now in its third month — hangs heavily over the two days of talks.

High-Stakes Diplomacy

The U.S. is pressing China, Iran’s largest oil customer, to use its influence to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz and push Tehran toward a lasting peace deal. Behind the scenes, American officials have been urging Beijing to apply pressure on Iran while navigating recent U.S. sanctions on Chinese firms accused of helping Tehran.

Trump downplayed tensions before departure, saying Xi had been “relatively good” during the crisis and insisting the U.S. has “Iran very much under control.” Still, the closure of the critical shipping lane has disrupted global energy flows and complicated Trump’s broader agenda.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss trade, technology (particularly AI), and Taiwan, where Trump has signaled he may raise U.S. arms sales directly with Xi.

This summit represents a delicate high-wire act for Trump. He arrives needing tangible wins — especially on trade and energy — to project strength after a costly war in the Middle East. For Xi Jinping, the visit offers an opportunity to stabilize relations with Washington while protecting China’s economic interests and avoiding deeper entanglement in the Iran conflict.

Both sides appear motivated to prevent the Iran crisis from derailing broader cooperation. A major Boeing jet order and discussions on a new bilateral trade framework are expected to headline the trip. Yet underlying strategic rivalry remains intense, particularly over technology restrictions and Taiwan.

The world will be watching closely to see whether Trump can secure meaningful concessions from Xi or if the Iran war forces difficult compromises that could reshape U.S. policy in Asia.
