Millions of Americans who rely on Social Security are watching a key number: next year’s cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. The latest projections suggest the 2027 COLA could be the largest increase in four years, even as inflation shows signs of cooling.

What the new COLA update shows

Recent estimates put the 2027 Social Security COLA between 3.6% and 3.8%, up from the 2.8% increase that took effect in January 2026. The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a major seniors’ advocacy group, now forecasts a 3.6% COLA for 2027, slightly lower than its earlier 3.8% projection but still well above this year’s raise. AARP and other analysts have issued similar estimates in the same range, based on recent Consumer Price Index data.

If a 3.6%–3.8% adjustment holds, it would be the highest COLA since 2024, when retirees saw a 3.2% increase, followed by 2.5% in 2025 and 2.8% in 2026. For the average retired worker, whose benefit was about $1,938 a month in 2026, a 3.8% COLA would add roughly $73–$77 per month, lifting the typical check to around $2,011.

Why the 2027 COLA matters

The COLA is designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation. It is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing average prices from the third quarter of one year to the third quarter of the next. When prices for essentials like food, housing, and energy rise, the COLA is meant to prevent benefits from losing purchasing power.

After several years of high inflation, many seniors say even the 2.8% COLA for 2026 has not fully covered their rising costs. A larger 2027 adjustment would provide meaningful relief, especially for beneficiaries who depend on Social Security for most or all of their income.

When the official COLA will be announced

Despite the new projections, the official 2027 COLA has not been set. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will announce the final figure in mid-October 2026, after the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September 2026 CPI-W report. Historically, the announcement comes in the second or third week of October.

Once the SSA confirms the COLA, the increase will take effect with benefits payable in January 2027 for Social Security recipients, and with SSI payments for January 2027 (paid at the end of December 2026) for Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries.

How to check your future benefit

The SSA encourages beneficiaries to create a my Social Security account at ssa.gov to view their personal COLA notice as soon as it is available online, often before the paper notice arrives by mail. Recipients can also estimate their new benefit by multiplying their current monthly payment by the projected COLA percentage, then rounding to the nearest dollar.

For now, the message from advocates and analysts is clear: the 2027 COLA looks set to be the strongest in years, but the final number will depend on inflation data over the next two months.
