Days ago, American politics witnessed the biggest plot twist of all time. President Biden's Sunday announcement that he's terminating his reelection efforts and instead endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris wasn't something that many people expected.

Nevertheless, it didn't take long for the Democratic Party to get behind Harris. She's received endorsements from the nation's top liberal lawmakers, governors, and other important leaders.

Less than 24 hours ago, the vice president also secured more than enough delegates, making her the de facto nominee of the Democratic Party. Following this development, Harris put out a statement confirming she'll soon formally accept the nomination at the DNC convention.

With the vice president all but a shoo-in to face Donald Trump this November, questions are rising about which Democrat she'll select as her running mate.

There are several options on the table

According to reports from MSNBC and other outlets, the following individuals are in the running to support Harris on the Democratic ticket:

• Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly
• Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
• Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro
• North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper
• Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz

Earlier this morning, TV producer Kyle Griffin announced via X that Harris' campaign has sought out vetting materials from the aforementioned individuals. Reports from ABC News stated just over one hour ago that among these five potentials, Kelly and Shapiro stand as "leading candidates."

Picking the most strategic vice presidential prospect

On social media, Americans aren't hesitating to weigh in on the attributes that will be most advantageous to Harris in the election.

Many people have suggested a moderate Democrat from a swing state will go a long way. This could help the vice president win over Independent voters, swing voters, and other members of the electorate who aren't keen on backing Trump-Vance.

There are further speculations that if Harris selects a vice presidential contender from a battleground state, this will assist her in picking up key electoral votes to reach (or surpass) 270.

With the Democrats set to hold their convention beginning on Monday, August 19, it's highly likely that Harris will announce her VP pick in the days or weeks ahead.
