World’s Oldest Pyramid carved in lava

Gunung Padang, first explored by Dutch adventurers in 1890, has long puzzled researchers, who debated whether it was a natural geological formation or a man-made pyramid.

However, the latest radiocarbon dating has brought forth astonishing results, dating the early construction of the pyramid back to over 16,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age.

 This astounding revelation places Gunung Padang at least 10,000 years older than iconic monuments like the pyramids of Giza in Egypt and England's Stonehenge.

Gunung Padang's uniqueness lies in the fact that its earliest layer was meticulously carved from cooled lava flows. The ancient builders ingeniously worked with the natural environment, rather than against it, harnessing the resources at hand.

 This approach demonstrates the resourcefulness of ancient civilizations and their ability to create sophisticated structures that endure through the ages.

Probing the Mysteries 

This groundbreaking discovery challenges conventional wisdom about the capabilities of ancient hunter-gatherer societies. The researchers behind the Gunung Padang project suggest that this megalithic wonder sheds light on the advanced engineering skills of ancient civilizations. 

Gunung Padang may even surpass Göbekli Tepe, the previous frontrunner for the title of the world's oldest 'megalith,' by thousands of years.

From 2011 to 2015, a dedicated team led by geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja of Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency delved deep into the mysteries of Gunung Padang. 

Using ground-penetrating radar, core drilling, and trench excavation techniques, the researchers were able to explore the pyramid's first layers, which extend a staggering 98 feet below the surface.

Within Gunung Padang's core, the team uncovered meticulously sculpted and massive lava-stone structures made of andesite, a fine-grained igneous rock.

 This innermost chamber, known as Unit 4, likely started as a natural lava hill before being sculpted and enveloped during the last glacial period, between 16,000 and 27,000 years ago.

A Monument Built Across Millennia

The researchers believe that Gunung Padang was constructed in a complex and sophisticated series of stages, with each layer representing a different era.

 After the construction of Unit 4 during the Ice Age, it was abandoned for thousands of years. Subsequently, around 7900–6100 BCE, Unit 3 was deliberately buried with substantial soil fills, marking a deliberate transition.

 Later phases, including the construction of Unit 1, occurred between 6000 and 5500 BCE, followed by a final layer, Unit 1, completed between 2000 and 1100 BCE.

In 1998, Indonesia's Ministry of Education and Culture recognized Gunung Padang as a heritage site of local interest. This acknowledgment underscores the profound importance of the site throughout history, attracting ancient peoples to occupy and modify it repeatedly.
