Murder House where Kohberger allegedly killed 4, demolished

Murder House

The University of Idaho proceeded with the demolition of the murder house where four students were brutally killed, allegedly by Bryan Kohberger.

The families of the victims argue that the residence held crucial evidentiary value and sent out a last-minute appeal for the house to be preserved till Kohberger’s trial.

Prosecutors charged Bryan Kohberger with the murders. They allege that in the early morning hours, he entered an off-campus home housing University of Idaho students. And committed the brutal stabbings.

The surviving roommate's account, witnessing a man in black walking through the home and hearing cries, adds a chilling layer to the narrative. Kohberger's identification reportedly involved DNA found on a knife sheath and surveillance footage of a white Hyundai Elantra, matching the vehicle he drove.

Murder House Controversy

The tragic murders occurred in the early morning of November 13, 2022, when four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, and Ethan Chapin—were stabbed to death in their sleep.

The alleged perpetrator, Bryan Kohberger, a first-year Ph.D. student in criminology at Washington State University, is facing charges for the crimes. Kernodle had picked up a DoorDash order from the porch just minutes before she was killed.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings against Kohberger, the University of Idaho decided to demolish the house where the murders took place.

University President Scott Green defended the move as a "healing step" for the community. However, the decision sparked dissent among the families of the victims, particularly Kaylee Goncalves and Xana Kernodle.

Families' Plea for Evidentiary Preservation

The families of the victims, Goncalves and Kernodle, expressed their disagreement with the university's decision. They argued that the residence held essential evidentiary value for the ongoing case against Kohberger.

The families contended that the house could provide insights into various aspects, such as the entry and escape routes of the alleged killer, vantage points of surviving roommates, and the overall targeting of the home.

The families believe the residence could answer some outstanding questions. And they emphasized the need for diagrams, models, and technology in the trial.

Concerns were voiced about whether crucial details, including the route Kernodle took during her DoorDash order, the discovery of biological evidence, and the potential targeting of the home, could be adequately addressed if the house was demolished.

Prosecutor's Response

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson communicated to the University of Idaho that the state would not use the home for a jury view.

Citing Idaho case law, Thompson argued that the current condition of the premises differed significantly from the time of the homicides, making a 'jury view' unauthorized. Despite declining a jury view, the prosecutor acknowledged the university's assistance in gathering measurements for illustrative exhibits.

The University of Idaho's decision to demolish the murder house continues to stir controversy.  The families of the victims can only hope that the prosecutor has developed the exhibits that will prove that Kohbereger is the killer.
