NEW MEXICO - In a stunning development that could signal the beginning of a sweeping federal crackdown, the FBI has arrested former New Mexico Magistrate Judge Juan Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, for allegedly harboring an undocumented immigrant with suspected ties to the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. The arrest occurred just weeks after Cano’s abrupt resignation following a dramatic federal raid at his residence in Doña Ana County.

According to court records and federal agents, the individual at the center of the storm is 23-year-old Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an illegal alien from Venezuela. Ortega-Lopez was discovered living in a "casita"—a guest house—behind the Cano residence. Federal authorities allege that Ortega-Lopez entered the U.S. illegally in December 2023 and was released on humanitarian parole due to overcrowding at the border.

A Chain of Alleged Connections

What began as a tip to Homeland Security Investigations in January 2025 spiraled into a full-blown federal probe. Agents began monitoring Ortega-Lopez after anonymous sources reported his gang affiliations and possession of firearms. The investigation quickly pointed to the Cano household, where Ortega-Lopez had reportedly been hired by Nancy Cano as a handyman and later offered residence.

What agents found was more than just a guest overstaying his welcome. Social media evidence presented in federal court reveals disturbing images and videos of Ortega-Lopez posing with firearms—some believed to have originated from April Cano, the judge's stepdaughter. Even more incriminating, photos surfaced of Judge Cano and Ortega-Lopez smiling together, with one video allegedly showing the judge accepting a military-style rifle from Ortega-Lopez.

During the raid, four firearms were recovered from a property adjacent to the Cano residence, reportedly owned by April Cano. Ortega-Lopez admitted to firing the weapons, a fact that now has him facing federal charges for being an illegal alien in possession of firearms—a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

A Judge, a Resignation, and a Bombshell Letter

His bombshell resignation letter, dated March 3, came on the heels of the federal raid and arrests. The case appears to align with the Trump administrations warnings issued to state officials, suggesting that those found harboring illegal immigrants—particularly with criminal ties—would face felony charges. According to insiders, the Cano arrest may be the first in a wave of actions targeting state and local officials allegedly complicit in immigration violations.

Alleged Gang Ties and Social Media Footprints

Tren de Aragua, the gang at the center of the storm, has gained international infamy for its involvement in drug trafficking, human smuggling, extortion, and brutal violence. Ortega-Lopez reportedly displayed multiple signs of affiliation, including gang-related tattoos, distinctive clothing, and incriminating voicemails.

Federal documents indicate that Lopez’s social media accounts played a critical role in the investigation. Videos show him handling weapons at a Las Cruces shooting range and socializing with the Cano family, painting a picture of disturbing familiarity and comfort.
