The cyclical nature of America’s gun market has once again delivered a hard blow. Umbrella Armory filed for Chapter 7, marking the latest collapse in a sector where political winds and economic tides often dictate survival.

For years, firearm sales in the United States have followed a predictable rhythm — surging during election seasons and cooling afterward. But when demand fades too quickly, companies caught in the downdraft can spiral toward financial ruin.

That appears to be the fate of Umbrella Armory, a custom firearms and airsoft manufacturer now entering liquidation after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Election Cycles Fuel Firearm Sales

Industry experts say gun sales often rise and fall alongside the nation’s political climate.

“Firearm sales go up in election years,” said Mark Oliva of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, speaking to Pew Pew Tactical.

Data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation supports that claim. Since the launch of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), firearm background checks have risen during every election cycle.

In 2000, the first presidential election year after NICS began operations, roughly 8.5 million Americans underwent background checks through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives system.

Four years later, in 2004, that number climbed slightly to about 8.7 million requests.

But the pattern accelerated dramatically during the presidency of Barack Obama, as fears of stricter gun regulations pushed many buyers toward gun stores.

According to Pew Pew Tactical, background checks surged by an average of 146% every four years beginning in 2008. During Obama’s first presidential campaign that year, Americans submitted roughly 12.7 million background check requests — about 50% higher than the total recorded four years earlier.

Demand Surges and Collapses

The industry’s dramatic swings mirror disruptions seen in other markets.

Just as the COVID-19 pandemic rattled sectors like electronics, home fitness equipment and furniture — creating demand spikes followed by painful slowdowns — the firearms industry has faced similar volatility.

Those sudden shifts have triggered multiple bankruptcies among firearms-related companies in recent years.

Now, Umbrella Armory has joined the list.

Bankruptcy Filing Details

Umbrella Armory filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on March 3, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, according to filings tracked by Inforuptcy.

The case represents a voluntary Chapter 7 liquidation, meaning a court-appointed trustee will oversee the sale of company assets to repay creditors, according to reports from Bankruptcy Observer.

Financial disclosures paint a stark picture of the company’s condition.

Umbrella Armory reported estimated assets between $0 and $100,000 while listing liabilities ranging from $100,001 to $1 million.

Court documents show the business has between one and 49 creditors. The bankruptcy case is filed under case number 6:26-bk-11538 in the Central District of California, according to PacerMonitor.

The company specialized in the airsoft equipment market, selling high-end customized airsoft rifles and parts, according to reporting by Edhat.

Gun Industry Faces Cooling Demand

The broader firearms market has also begun to cool.

“The industry’s fortunes tend to rise and fall based on the country’s political climate,” reported The Wall Street Journal.

During the Obama years, gun purchases climbed sharply amid fears of regulatory crackdowns. But demand softened after Donald Trump entered the White House pledging to protect gun rights.

More recently, sales have continued sliding.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation reported that firearm sales fell 4.1% in 2025 to roughly 14.6 million units, down from more than 15.2 million in 2024. The data was cited by the National Rifle Association publication American Rifleman.

Analysts say the slowdown began raising alarms last year.

“Slow demand was expected, but slow reaction is not,” said Kaleb Seymour, vice president of data and analytics at Gearfire, speaking to SGB Media.

“The third quarter was a wake-up call,” Seymour said. “The question now is who will adjust before year-end and who will get caught waiting.”

Umbrella Armory, it appears, was among those caught in the market’s sudden downturn.

Inside the Company’s Financial Troubles

Financial filings reveal just how thin the company’s cash reserves had become.

Umbrella Armory reported holding only $1,880.63 across two business checking accounts, according to EdHat Santa Barbara.

Its debt structure includes a secured loan of $94,601.40 from the U.S. Small Business Administration, listed through the agency’s Office of General Counsel in Los Angeles.

The company also listed several unsecured debts.

Those include $6,000 owed to the California Franchise Tax Board and $470.57 owed to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

Additionally, Umbrella Armory reported $45,000 in credit card debt to Bank of America, along with smaller outstanding balances to Frontier Communications and Warmington Properties Inc. for services and back rent.

The company has halted gun sales through its website but says it continues offering smaller replacement parts.

Post-Pandemic Market Reality

Analysts say the pandemic-era surge in gun buying created a wave of one-time customers — many of whom have now stepped away from the market.

“During the pandemic, people were worried about societal collapse in one way or another,” said Dru Stevenson, a law professor at South Texas College of Law Houston, speaking to CNBC.

“If you didn’t own a gun and decided you needed one for self-defense, you went and bought it — and now you’re done,” Stevenson said.

That one-time buying spree may now be haunting manufacturers and retailers alike.

Advice for Customers Buying From Bankrupt Companies

Consumers should exercise caution when purchasing products from companies operating under bankruptcy protection.

Legal experts recommend paying with a credit card whenever possible to preserve the ability to dispute charges.

“Filing a dispute with your credit card company is acceptable, and the bankruptcy court may not affect that process,” said Gino Megna, a bankruptcy attorney based in Clearwater, Florida, writing on Avvo.com.

Megna noted that contacting a company undergoing bankruptcy proceedings may yield little progress.

“Everything is essentially locked inside the bankruptcy court for now,” he said.

For Umbrella Armory, the Chapter 7 filing marks the final chapter of a business that once thrived in a booming niche market — but ultimately could not withstand the industry’s dramatic swings.
