In an unusual twist that reads more like a legal chess move than a typical Capitol Hill scandal, Rep. Max Miller asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate him — and got exactly what he asked for. Hours after the Ohio Republican publicly demanded a probe into his own conduct, the committee announced Tuesday it would do just that, launching a formal inquiry tied to the Max Miller domestic abuse allegations now dominating headlines.

"In light of all the renewed interest in my family affairs I am going to file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family," Miller wrote in a post on X. "I have absolutely nothing to hide."

The committee didn't waste time. In a statement released within hours, it confirmed it would examine whether Miller "may have engaged in domestic violence and abuse or illegal drug use in violation of the Code of Official Conduct or any other applicable standard of conduct."

The controversy has taken on the weight of a family drama spilling into national politics. Miller now faces mounting calls to resign, including from GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno — who happens to be the father of Miller's ex-wife, Emily Moreno. Moreno said Miller should not continue serving in the House and should instead "seek professional help," a rare and pointed rebuke from within his own party and family circle alike.

The Allegations at the Center

Emily Moreno has accused Miller of serious domestic abuse, including claims that he held a gun to her head and broke their daughter's collarbone. Miller has firmly denied the allegations, describing them as shifting and unsubstantiated.

Miller's Public Defense Takes a Troubling Turn

Miller attempted to counter the claims Sunday through a livestreamed statement and by releasing a collection of documents connected to the couple's divorce proceedings. That release, however, created its own controversy: among the materials was an intimate image involving the couple's daughter. Miller's attorney, Aaron Minc, said the image was uploaded by mistake.

Neither a spokesperson for Emily Moreno nor a committee spokesperson offered additional comment beyond acknowledging the ethics request and the panel's official statement.

What Comes Next

Miller said he intends to hand over "all necessary documents needed for a detailed examination" to the Ethics Committee. Given the panel's historically slow pace, it's unlikely to reach any conclusions before the November midterm election, where Miller is already bracing for a serious challenge from a well-positioned Democratic opponent.

"The accusations continue to change, but my facts stay the same," Miller said. "I am looking forward to my colleagues reading everything for themselves."

Whether the investigation clears his name or deepens the scrutiny surrounding him remains an open question — one that will likely shadow his campaign through Election Day.
