Christian Metal Band Demon Hunter Declares War on Netflix: Inside the High-Stakes Trademark Battle Over ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

INSIDE THIS REPORT

  • Christian metal band Demon Hunter has sued Netflix, Netflix Studios and AEG Presents, alleging its name has been swallowed whole by the streamer's animated blockbuster.
  • The band's legal team points to real-world confusion, including a $500 ticket mix-up and a misdirected Oscar-related media inquiry.
  • The case lands as Netflix pushes "KPop Demon Hunters" into merchandise and a global concert tour, raising the legal stakes for both sides.

For nearly a quarter century, Demon Hunter carved out its identity the hard way — touring circuits, twelve studio albums, and a devoted fan base that made the Seattle-founded metal band synonymous with its own name. Now that name has collided head-on with a Netflix juggernaut, and the band says it isn't backing down.

Hyde Lane, the corporate entity behind Demon Hunter, filed suit this week against Netflix, Netflix Studios and live-events giant AEG Presents, accusing the companies of trademark infringement and unfair competition tied to the runaway success of "KPop Demon Hunters." The complaint, filed in California, argues that Netflix's animated hit has not just borrowed attention from the band — it has actively distorted the marketplace in which Demon Hunter has operated since 2000.

A Name Built Over Decades, Now Contested in Court

Brothers Ryan and Don Clark formed Demon Hunter in Seattle at the turn of the millennium, steadily building a catalog that now spans twelve studio albums and a fan base exceeding 348,000 monthly Spotify listeners. Early tracks like "Dead Flowers" and "Someone to Hate" racked up millions of YouTube views over the years, cementing the band's footing in the metalcore scene long before anyone associated the words "demon hunter" with a K-pop girl group.

Hyde Lane first trademarked "Demon Hunter" for live entertainment in 2014, later expanding that protection in 2022 to cover recorded music and merchandise. Netflix, by contrast, began filing its own trademark applications for "KPop Demon Hunters" merchandise in August 2025 — well after Demon Hunter's marks were already on the books, according to the suit.

That timeline matters. Trademark law generally favors whoever established rights to a mark first, and Hyde Lane is leaning hard on that seniority argument. The complaint frames the dispute in blunt terms: a small, independent band being steamrolled not because its rights are weaker, but because Netflix and AEG simply have more money and a bigger megaphone.

When Fans Can't Tell the Two Apart

Lawsuits alleging "consumer confusion" often live or die on concrete examples, and Hyde Lane's filing offers several. In one instance detailed in the complaint, a fan requested a refund after paying roughly $500 for tickets to a Demon Hunter concert in Albany, New York — only to realize the tickets had nothing to do with the "KPop Demon Hunters" show they actually wanted to see. Without that refund, the fan wrote, they wouldn't be able to afford tickets to the real KPop Demon Hunters event.

The confusion, the suit claims, hasn't stayed confined to fans. It alleges that a television producer working on a story tied to the film's Oscar win for original song reached out to Demon Hunter's own management, apparently believing they were in contact with people connected to the movie. The band also says it has been mistakenly tagged across social media in posts meant for the Netflix franchise — a recurring headache the suit describes as evidence that the two brands have become dangerously entangled in the public mind.

The Stakes Escalate With a Global Tour

The timing of the lawsuit is no accident. In May, Netflix and AEG Presents announced a global concert tour built around "KPop Demon Hunters," pushing the franchise directly into the live-events space where Demon Hunter has operated commercially for years. For a band whose trademark protections explicitly cover live performances, that expansion strikes at the heart of its business.

Hyde Lane's complaint doesn't specify damages, but it does ask the court to hold Netflix and Netflix Studios liable for infringement — a request that, if successful, could shape how far a media giant can push a title into markets already claimed by a smaller trademark holder.

The lawsuit arrives almost exactly a year after "KPop Demon Hunters" became Netflix's most-watched animated original film, and just months after its signature track, "Golden," made history as the first K-pop song to win an Academy Award. A sequel is already in the works. Whether that sequel — and the accompanying tour — moves forward without further legal friction may now depend on how a California court weighs a global streaming giant's ambitions against a metal band's decades-old name.
