NEW YORK - Television’s polished façade cracked wide open this week as three major controversies collided—an unexplained departure at Fox News, serious allegations surrounding the voice of Wheel of Fortune, and an escalating constitutional showdown between ABC and the federal government.

Together, the developments expose the immense legal, reputational and regulatory pressures now reshaping American broadcasting.

Fox News Abruptly Parts Ways With Maria Bartiromo

Fox News Media announced Thursday that Maria Bartiromo was leaving the network effective immediately after more than 12 years.

“We thank Maria for her work over the last 12 ½ years and wish her all the best on her next chapter,” the network said in its official announcement.

Fox gave no specific reason for the decision. A spokesperson described it only as a “business decision,” while Reuters reported that Bartiromo’s last personal appearance was Aug. 9.

Her departure immediately dismantled a prominent three-show television presence. Mornings with Maria will become Mornings with FOX Business with rotating anchors. Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street will be renamed FBN’s Wall Street, while Jason Chaffetz will temporarily take over Sunday Morning Futures.

Bartiromo, who joined Fox after two decades at CNBC, had become one of the network’s most recognizable financial and political personalities. Her unexplained exit leaves unanswered questions about why Fox moved so abruptly against one of its marquee anchors.

Jim Thornton Suspended as Sony Investigates

Sony Pictures Television separately suspended longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton after a passenger reportedly photographed material visible on his laptop during a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles.

The passenger alleged that Thornton appeared to be viewing a chatroom serving people with pedophilic thoughts. The passenger alerted the flight crew, and law enforcement officers met Thornton when the plane arrived at Los Angeles International Airport, according to TMZ’s report.

Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, said her client entered the site accidentally after receiving a link from someone connected to an online suicide-prevention community. Hart maintained that the website contained no unlawful child pornography, that Thornton committed no crime and that officers released him after briefly questioning him.

Thornton was not arrested or charged. Sony’s suspension is an internal employment action—not a finding of criminal wrongdoing—and the company said it is recasting the announcer’s role while conducting its investigation.

ABC and FCC Head Toward First Amendment Showdown

The week’s most consequential legal battle may be unfolding in Washington, where the FCC asked a federal judge to dismiss Disney and ABC’s lawsuit challenging the accelerated review of licenses for eight ABC-owned television stations.

The FCC argues that the reviews concern allegations of unlawful employment discrimination, not Jimmy Kimmel or ABC’s programming. It also contends that the dispute belongs before a federal appellate court rather than a district judge.

ABC alleges something far more dangerous: that the government is using its licensing authority to punish and pressure a network whose programming has angered President Donald Trump.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr ordered the early reviews in April, even though the licenses were not scheduled for renewal consideration until October 2028. According to Reuters, the agency had not initiated such an early review in more than 50 years.

U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan has scheduled an Oct. 6 hearing. The case could help define when legitimate broadcast oversight crosses the constitutional line into government retaliation against protected editorial speech.
