FLORIDA - President Donald Trump is publicly defending the plea agreement that spared Tiger Woods a DUI conviction—but the golfer’s relationship with the president and his reported phone call from the crash scene have placed the high-profile resolution under an unforgiving spotlight.

“I thought it was very fair,” Trump, 80, said after Woods received a five-year driver’s-license suspension stemming from his March 27 rollover crash near his Jupiter Island home.

Trump described Woods as a “great guy” suffering from severe pain and repeated advice he said he gave the golf legend long ago—stop driving and hire someone to get behind the wheel.

“I think he’s gonna have somebody drive him,” Trump said. “He’s gonna have somebody drive him from now on.”

Woods pleaded no contest in Martin County court to reckless driving and refusing to submit to lawful testing. A no-contest plea does not formally admit guilt, but the criminal justice system treats it as a conviction.

Judge Darren Steele imposed $1,500 in fines and suspended Woods’ license for five years without a driving exception. Steele warned Woods that driving during the suspension would send him “immediately” back to jail.

The original DUI charge was dropped after two toxicologists concluded prosecutors lacked sufficient evidence to prove impairment beyond a reasonable doubt. Woods passed a Breathalyzer test for alcohol but refused a urine test. Deputies nevertheless reported observing signs of impairment and recovered two hydrocodone pills from his pocket.

State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl said pharmacy records established that Woods possessed a lawful prescription and had developed a pharmacological tolerance after years of pain treatment. Bakkedahl publicly defended the agreement, saying he reached the result he believed was legally right.

Police body-camera footage added a politically sensitive wrinkle. At the crash scene, Woods pulled out his phone and later told a deputy, “I was just talking to the president.”

The conversation was not captured, and the White House did not initially confirm whether Woods had spoken with Trump. Nothing in the released footage proves Woods asked Trump to intervene or that the president attempted to influence investigators, prosecutors or the court. Still, calling—or appearing to call—the nation’s most powerful political figure during a police encounter creates unavoidable questions about access, privilege and public confidence. ESPN documented the exchange.

Why Trump Cannot Pardon Woods

Any suggestion that Trump could eventually erase Woods’ Florida case through a presidential pardon runs into a constitutional wall.

Article II permits presidents to grant clemency only for federal offenses. The Justice Department expressly states that a president has no authority to pardon a state conviction. Woods was prosecuted in Florida state court, making his case—and the five-year suspension—outside Trump’s presidential clemency power. The Justice Department explains the limitation here.
