After selling himself to the people as a centrist and claiming that his goal is to unify the country, it's becoming evident that President Joe Biden is being led by progressives and liberal activists. Sunday, Axios reported, "President Biden has outlined the most liberal agenda in a generation. But centrist Democrats, including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), are potential deal-killers on climate change, spending and immigration reform." This past week, it seemed Vice President Kamala Harris attempted to take a page from former President Trump's book and conduct local interviews without giving any deference to Senator Manchin. Senator Bernie Sanders, self-proclaimed socialist, is currently holding the purse-strings for the Congressional Budget and is giving interviews stating there are ways to pass the immense COVID relief bill without proper support. Despite President Biden's criticisms of using extensive executive orders, that is exactly what has happened. Biden even criticized representatives stating, "Some of my Democratic friends even, occasionally say, 'Well, if you can't get the votes, by executive order you're going to do something.' There's things you can't do by executive order unless you're a dictator. We're a democracy. We need consensus." To date, he has governed by executive order, topping out over 40 EOs in a week, which outpace his last three predecessors combined.  Additionally, his promise to remain a unifying centrist seems to be off the table. With a country in need of healing, and two sides longing to be heard, Biden was portrayed as a President of All Americans. These moves and behaviors could deepen the dangerous divide and solidify the far right's belief that progressive liberals used Biden and Harris as a front. Beyond President Biden leading with the pen instead of solid policy, Speaker Pelosi, known progressive, is also engaging in highly divisive rhetoric and freely stating Friday, that her Republican counterparts aren't "thinking. Or maybe thinking is too generous a term." This dismissive and volatile speech is exactly what all constituents were seeking to avoid in electing President Biden. The expected change is just more of the same, except that we are now swinging the pendulum drastically to the other side. Some of the Executive orders, such as those on climate change and racial equity have been wanted by both sides of the aisle for many years, despite the news cycle bringing issues to light only during campaign years. Bringing these particular orders to Congress (not padded by additional spending or other non-essential issues) should easily have passed.
