According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, these innovative creations will utilize OpenAI’s Sora model, a cutting-edge technology capable of translating textual descriptions into video sequences.

Tribeca Film Festival Shift

This landmark inclusion of AI-generated films represents a significant shift for the long-standing festival, as it ventures into uncharted territory to explore the creative possibilities offered by emerging technologies. Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, expressed the festival's commitment to storytelling as a catalyst for change. The filmmakers behind these AI-generated shorts were granted access to the Sora model, a proprietary technology not yet available to the public.

Despite the novelty of this collaboration, filmmakers were required to adhere to agreements negotiated with industry guilds such as the Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to ensure ethical and legal compliance in the realm of AI-generated content.

Filmmaking with Sora

OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, highlighted the collaborative nature of this endeavor, emphasizing the importance of filmmaker feedback in refining the Sora model to better serve the creative community. 

The Sora model's limitations in handling complex narrative structures raise questions about its suitability for long-form storytelling.
