According to authorities, a police officer in central California engaged in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect during a pursuit, resulting in the officer being shot in his bulletproof vest. The suspect was subsequently killed by another officer on the scene.
Police Chief Mindy Casto reported that on Saturday evening, a suspect fled from a traffic stop in northwest Fresno. The suspect drove recklessly, endangering other motorists by cutting them off and running red lights, prompting a police helicopter crew to monitor his movements.
After the suspect was pursued and located by officers on the ground, he exited his vehicle and began firing shots, as per the police report. In response, the officers returned fire, ultimately resulting in the suspect being incapacitated, Casto explained.
As of Sunday, the investigation was still in progress, and it remained unclear how many rounds were discharged by either the suspect or the two officers involved in the incident. However, the deputy chief did confirm that the suspect had fired his weapon at least once.
