Good Earth Light Bars

In a significant safety alert, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled over 1.2 million Good Earth lights including light bars. This is due to severe fire and burn hazards. The recall follows multiple reports of fires, including one that resulted in the death of a homeowner. Details of this extensive recall were first reported by USA Today.

The affected Good Earth rechargeable integrated lights pose serious risks as their lithium-ion batteries can overheat, potentially igniting the plastic housing of the light bars. This overheating has been linked to one fatal incident and another case where an individual was treated for smoke inhalation. The recall also extends to an additional 37,800 units sold in Canada.

Good Earth Lighting, the Illinois-based company behind the product, has received nine further reports of lights overheating. Six of these incidents led to fires, causing property damage. In response to the recall, the company has issued an urgent statement on its website, urging customers to "immediately unplug and stop using your unit."

The recalled light bars are designed as alternatives to permanently wired fixtures, particularly in areas where installing wired lights is challenging. The devices, approximately 12 inches in length, were sold individually or in packages of two, and were available in various colors including white, silver, black, almond, and rose gold. They come with a charging cable and, in some cases, a remote control and power adapter.

These light bars were sold at major U.S. hardware and home improvement stores such as Lowe’s and Ace Hardware, as well as online retailers like Amazon, from October 2017 through January 2024. The units were priced at about $20 for a single bar and around $35 for a two-pack.

Model Numbers and Manufacturing

The recalled units, manufactured in Cambodia and China, can be identified by model numbers starting with RE1122, RE1145, RE1362, and RE1250. The specific model numbers involved in the recall include:

  • RE1122-WHG-12LF0-G
  • RE1122-WHG-12LF0-F
  • RE1122-SIL-12LF0-G
  • RE1362-RGB-12LF2-G
  • RE1250-WHG-12LFR-G
  • And others as listed in the recall notice.

Customers can find the model number on a white sticker located on the back of the device.

Free Replacement Program

Good Earth Lighting is offering a free replacement light bar to all affected consumers, with no shipping or handling fees. The company advises customers to keep the faulty unit but not use it until they have registered for a replacement and received disposal instructions.

To participate in the replacement program, owners should write the date and their initials next to the model number on the back of the device, mark the front of the light with "Recalled," and upload photos to the company's recall website at Good Earth Lighting Recall.

This critical recall underscores the importance of addressing potential hazards in consumer products to ensure safety in the home. Consumers are strongly encouraged to take immediate action to prevent further incidents.
