Janet Mills suspends Senate campaign

Maine Gov. Janet Mills announced Thursday that she is stepping back from her bid for the U.S. Senate, citing a critical lack of campaign funding and reshaping the Democratic primary landscape in a race already charged with national implications.

Her decision clears a path for political newcomer Graham Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, who is now poised to take on Republican Sen. Susan Collins in what is expected to be a fiercely contested general election.

“While I have the drive and passion… I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,” Mills said, describing her withdrawal as an “incredibly difficult decision.”

A race Democrats could not afford to lose

Mills had been viewed as a top-tier recruit by Senate Democrats eager to unseat Collins, the lone Republican senator representing a state that President Donald Trump lost in the last election.

Maine is widely seen as a must-win battleground for Democrats aiming to flip control of the Senate in the 2026 midterms, where the party needs a net gain of four seats. Yet Collins, a seasoned incumbent, has repeatedly proven difficult to defeat.

Despite strong backing from party leadership, Mills struggled to build momentum after launching her campaign in October.

Platner’s rapid rise reshapes the primary

Graham Platner surged into the spotlight as an unconventional candidate, quickly building a dedicated base among Maine Democrats. His campaign gained traction with endorsements from high-profile progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Recent polling showed Platner leading Mills by double digits in the primary, signaling a rare grassroots rebellion against the preferences of national Democratic leaders.

Even with support from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Mills was unable to close the gap.

Concerns over age and messaging

At 78, Mills attempted to address voter concerns about her age by pledging to serve only one term if elected. Still, doubts lingered among segments of the electorate, with many viewing Platner as a fresher, more competitive option against Collins.

Mills’ campaign also warned that Platner’s past social media activity could become a liability in a general election. His online history included controversial posts that downplayed sexual assault and criticized police and rural communities.

Platner, an Army and Marine veteran, attributed those posts to struggles with post-traumatic stress following deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, arguing that the controversy ultimately strengthened his campaign.

Campaign struggles become visible

Signs of financial strain became increasingly apparent in the final weeks of Mills’ campaign. According to AdImpact, her team largely stopped running television ads by the end of March, while Platner continued saturating the airwaves and shifting focus toward Collins.

Mills’ campaign had attempted to counterattack, highlighting Platner’s past remarks in early advertising, particularly targeting concerns among female voters—a key demographic in Collins’ coalition.

Republicans seize the moment

With Platner emerging as the likely Democratic nominee, Republican groups have already begun sharpening their attacks. The GOP-aligned Pine Tree Results PAC launched ads spotlighting his past social media posts and a tattoo that critics linked to a Nazi symbol.

Platner has said he was unaware of any such association and has since covered the tattoo.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Tim Scott criticized Democrats, saying they had elevated a candidate he described as too extreme for Maine voters, while praising Collins’ track record.

What comes next

Mills’ exit marks a pivotal turning point in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. As Platner moves closer to securing the Democratic nomination, the contest is shifting from an internal party battle to a broader ideological clash with national stakes.

Whether his unconventional rise can withstand the scrutiny of a general election remains an open question—but the political terrain in Maine has already been dramatically redrawn.
