Manhattanhenge 2026: Final Summer Sunset Alignment Returns to New York as Crowds Gather for the Celestial Event

NEW YORK — Manhattanhenge is making its final appearance of the summer, offering New Yorkers and visitors one last opportunity in 2026 to witness one of the world's most unusual astronomical events. Manhattan's famous solar alignment blends astronomy, architecture, and photography in one of New York City's most anticipated annual traditions.

For just a few minutes, the setting sun will align almost perfectly with Manhattan's famous street grid. Sending brilliant orange and gold light cascading between rows of skyscrapers it will create one of the most photographed sunsets in the United States.

Unlike a solar eclipse or a meteor shower, Manhattanhenge requires no telescope or special equipment. The event unfolds in the middle of one of the world's busiest cities, transforming ordinary intersections into outdoor observatories as thousands of spectators pause to watch the sun disappear beyond the Hudson River.

What makes Manhattanhenge especially remarkable is that it is the result of both nature and human design. The phenomenon depends on Earth's orbit around the sun and the carefully engineered layout of Manhattan's streets, producing a visual effect found in only a handful of cities worldwide.

The History Behind Manhattanhenge

Although New Yorkers had undoubtedly noticed the unusual sunset alignment for decades, the event gained international attention after astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term "Manhattanhenge" in 2002 while serving as director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History.

Tyson borrowed the name from England's prehistoric Stonehenge, where massive stone monuments were constructed thousands of years ago to align with the rising and setting sun during the solstices. While Stonehenge was intentionally built to mark important celestial events, Manhattanhenge is an accidental product of urban planning.

The name quickly caught on with photographers, astronomers, and tourists, eventually becoming part of popular culture and earning a place in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Today, the event is covered by news organizations worldwide and has become one of New York City's signature seasonal attractions.

Why Manhattanhenge happens

Many people assume the sun rises due east and sets due west every day, but that is true only during the spring and autumn equinoxes.

The rest of the year, Earth's 23.5-degree axial tilt causes the sun's apparent position on the horizon to shift north and south gradually. Because Manhattan's Commissioners' Plan of 1811 established a street grid rotated roughly 30 degrees east of true north, the sun lines up with the city's east-west streets only on a few evenings before and after the summer solstice.

That unique angle creates two versions of the event.

The "full sun" alignment occurs when the entire disk of the sun is visible between the buildings just above the horizon. A day later comes the "half sun," when the lower portion of the sun has already dipped below the horizon while the remaining half continues glowing through the city's concrete canyon.

Each display lasts only a few minutes before the alignment disappears until the following year.

Best Places to Experience the Event

Experienced photographers recommend arriving at least 30 to 45 minutes before sunset because some streets become crowded long before the alignment begins.

Among the most popular viewing locations are:

  • 14th Street
  • 23rd Street
  • 34th Street
  • 42nd Street
  • 57th Street
  • Tudor City Overpass on East 42nd Street
  • Hunter's Point South Park in Long Island City

Observers should position themselves as far east as practical while looking west toward the Hudson River. A clear view of the horizon allows the sun to appear neatly framed by Manhattan's skyline.

City officials also remind visitors to remain on sidewalks or in designated pedestrian areas and avoid stepping into traffic while taking photographs.

Comparing Manhattanhenge with other natural wonders

Manhattanhenge belongs to a select group of astronomical events that inspire people to stop and look skyward.

A total solar eclipse briefly turns day into twilight as the moon completely blocks the sun. The aurora borealis paints colorful curtains across northern skies when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth's atmosphere. Meteor showers send dozens of shooting stars streaking overhead, while the spring and autumn equinoxes mark the moments when daylight and darkness are nearly equal across the globe.

Stonehenge itself continues attracting visitors who gather to watch the sunrise during the summer solstice, just as ancient people may have done thousands of years ago.

Unlike those events, however, Manhattanhenge relies on a combination of astronomy and modern engineering. Without Manhattan's distinctive street grid and towering skyscrapers, the phenomenon simply would not exist.

That unusual blend of science and architecture makes it one of the world's most recognizable examples of urban astronomy.

Similar Solar Alignments Around the World

Although Manhattanhenge is the best-known example, comparable solar alignments occur in several other cities built on rectangular street grids.

Chicago, Baltimore, Toronto and parts of Canada experience similar sunset alignments during different times of the year. Amateur photographers have coined names such as "Chicagohenge" and "Torontohenge" to describe these local versions.

The essential ingredients remain the same: a grid-oriented city, an unobstructed western horizon and the changing position of the sun throughout the seasons.

Manhattanhenge is More than a photography event

For scientists and educators, Manhattanhenge represents far more than an opportunity for striking photographs.

The annual event offers a highly visible lesson in astronomy, Earth's orbit, seasonal changes and the geometry of city planning. Teachers frequently use the phenomenon to explain why the sun appears in different parts of the sky throughout the year and how Earth's tilt affects the length of days and nights.

Organizations including the American Museum of Natural History continue using Manhattanhenge as a way to encourage public interest in astronomy and science education.

Meanwhile, the event has become a favorite assignment for photographers seeking dramatic images of sunlight reflecting off glass skyscrapers, yellow taxicabs and the crowds that gather each summer to witness the spectacle.

A reminder to look up

In a city known for its relentless pace, this event provides a rare opportunity for thousands of strangers to stop simultaneously and appreciate the natural world.

For a few fleeting minutes each summer, busy intersections become gathering places where residents and visitors share the same view of the setting sun framed by one of the world's most famous skylines.

The event serves as a reminder that even amid steel, concrete, and constant motion, the rhythms of the solar system continue uninterrupted, creating moments of wonder that connect modern city life with the timeless movements of the heavens.
