A raging inferno erupted Thursday afternoon at a large medical supply distribution center in Tracy, California, forcing evacuations and prompting a major multi-agency response as flames threatened to spread to nearby warehouses belonging to Amazon, FedEx, and Best Buy.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the 5700 block of Promontory Parkway at the Medline Inc. facility, about 62 miles south of Sacramento. By 3 p.m., the building was fully engulfed, with thick plumes of dark smoke visible for miles around the city.

Authorities are coordinating with the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority and mutual aid from several surrounding departments, including Stockton, Mountain House, Lathrop-Manteca, and Alameda County. Police have emphasized that there is currently “no threat to residents,” but evacuations are underway for safety as the situation develops.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and no injuries have been reported so far.

This rapidly escalating industrial fire highlights the serious risks posed by large-scale warehouse operations, especially in areas packed with critical logistics and supply chain hubs. Medline, a major player in manufacturing and distributing medical supplies worldwide, sits in close proximity to other major distribution centers — raising concerns about how quickly a single blaze could cascade into a much larger disaster.

As firefighters battle to contain the flames and prevent spread to neighboring facilities, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in America’s vast distribution network. With powerful winds and dry conditions often common in Northern California, one warehouse fire can quickly threaten lives, property, and essential supply chains.

Residents and officials are staying vigilant as the investigation into the cause begins. For now, the focus remains on containment and ensuring no further escalation occurs in this densely packed industrial zone.
