As the United States edges closer to a nationwide ban on TikTok, hundreds of thousands of American users are turning to Xiaohongshu, popularly known as “Red Note.”

This social media platform offers users a similar experience, allowing content sharing in formats like photos, text, videos, and livestreaming.

With TikTok’s 170 million U.S. users facing the platform’s potential shutdown on January 19, due to concerns over its Chinese ownership, Red Note has emerged as a compelling alternative.

The ban stems from apprehensions over data privacy and security tied to TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. However, the fate of TikTok isn’t entirely sealed; the Supreme Court could intervene, or ByteDance might comply with federal laws mandating the sale of its stake in the app.

What Is Red Note?

Xiaohongshu, or 小红书, translates to “Little Red Book” in Chinese. While its name harkens back to Mao Zedong’s book of quotations, it is widely referred to as “Red Note” in English.
