“Romantic Homicide” Singer D4vd Back In Court — But the Questions Haunting This Case Go Far Beyond the Courtroom

By Samuel López | USA Herald - A 14-year-old Hispanic girl laid dismembered in a Tesla trunk while her accused killer performed sold-out concerts. Now, with another hearing delayed, America needs to ask itself some uncomfortable questions.

LOS ANGELES — He sat slouched in an orange jail jumpsuit, reportedly unbothered, as attorneys argued scheduling logistics in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday. For David Anthony Burke — the 21-year-old indie-R&B pop sensation known professionally as D4vd — another month's delay in his murder case means another month before the full weight of these allegations is tested in open court.

For the family of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, and for the many advocates of justice watching this case unfold, it means another month of waiting for justice.

The preliminary evidentiary hearing has been pushed again — now set for June 29, 2026, with a status conference on June 17. D4vd has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. If convicted, he faces life without parole — or the death penalty.

But the courtroom delays are only part of the story. The deeper story is what happened before the handcuffs ever went on.

What Prosecutors Say Happened

According to a disturbing nine-page evidentiary brief released by prosecutors, D4vd allegedly arranged an Uber to bring Rivas Hernandez — then 14 — to his Hollywood Hills rental home on April 23, 2025. Investigators allege he fatally stabbed her, motivated by fear that she would expose their relationship and derail his rising music career.

Prosecutors allege D4vd first made contact with Rivas Hernandez when she was just 11 years old and allegedly initiated a sexual relationship with her at 13 — continuing contact even after law enforcement formally notified him of her age.

What followed, according to court documents, is almost too disturbing to process: the alleged purchase of chainsaws, a shovel, a body bag, and an inflatable pool. The decomposed remains of a teenage girl, prosecutors allege, were stored inside his Tesla for months — while D4vd, per Rolling Stone, allegedly "lied to friends, business associates, and others who noticed the strong smell of decay in and around his home and vehicle."

Authorities discovered those remains in September 2025 — only after the car was impounded.

The Questions the Music Industry Doesn't Want Asked

Here is where this story demands a harder look.

Between the alleged killing in April 2025 and D4vd's eventual arrest months later, information about this case was circulating. And yet the artist continued to perform. Tickets were sold. Revenue was generated. Fans showed up.

The question of what the industry knew — and when — deserves full scrutiny. Who among D4vd's handlers, label representatives, and management team had knowledge of the investigation's direction? And critically: did that knowledge influence the timing of any decisions made around his touring schedule?

The LAPD's arrest came after D4vd had completed his tour obligations. Whether that timing was coincidental, operationally necessary, or something else entirely is a question investigators and, ultimately, the public deserve answered. Law enforcement agencies do not always coordinate arrests around an artist's calendar — and when the optics suggest they might have, the burden falls on officials to explain their investigative timeline clearly and publicly.

The Victim the World Moved Past Too Quickly

Celeste Rivas Hernandez was 14 years old. She was Hispanic. She was someone's daughter.

It is a fair and necessary journalistic question to ask whether the public outrage surrounding this case matched the gravity of the alleged crime. High-profile murder cases involving young victims do not always generate equal attention. The demographics of both victim and accused can shape media coverage, fan loyalty, and public pressure on law enforcement — whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

D4vd's fan base did not evaporate when this case broke open. For a subset of the public, the music apparently remained separable from the allegations. That is a cultural reckoning worth having — not to assign guilt before a verdict, but to examine what we collectively decide to look away from, and whose pain we decide is worth interrupting our entertainment for.

Where Things Stand

D4vd's attorney, Blair Berk, has reminded the court that her client "is presumed innocent" — a constitutional protection that applies to every defendant, and one this publication respects. Nothing here is a verdict.

But presumed innocence does not mean the public must go silent. It does not mean the industry escapes scrutiny. And it certainly does not mean the questions surrounding this case — about timing, about institutional choices, about whose victimhood registers — should be quietly shelved until a judge gavels a courtroom to order on June 29.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez was 14. She deserves every question asked loudly, and every answer demanded fully.
