“They have been using this ‘obstruction of a proceeding’ law and stretching it to fit conduct that may or may not have occurred on January 6,” he contended.
DeSantis’ Stance on Trump’s Legal Proceedings
In response to the letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith to Trump, which mentioned charges such as defrauding the federal government and obstructing an official proceeding, DeSantis urged a cautious approach.
“People are going to look at it and say, nobody’s above the law,” DeSantis said. “If Donald Trump or any influential political figure is caught committing universally recognized crimes, then the law will run its course.”
“But when you attempt to fit conduct into these more obscure laws, given the politicized nature of the Garland Justice Department, you’re going to see a lot of people who will be skeptical,” the Florida Governor added, casting doubt over the credibility of the charges against Trump.
