Texas Nuns Legal Battle with Diocese: Amidst Sin, Denial and Property Values

Texas nuns

The Monastery of the Most Holy Trinity in Arlington has become the epicenter of an intense legal battle between a group of Texas nuns and the Fort Worth Diocese, led by Bishop Michael Olson.

The public nature of the accusations against the Reverend Mother and the civil litigation amidst the nuns' denial has captured international attention and support.

Meanwhile, questions surround the motivations behind Bishop Olson's investigation and the actions of the Diocese. And locals are wondering if the skyrocketing value of the monastery's land is part of the equation.

Texas nuns garner support

The support for the nuns has been evident. Catholics gathered this week to show solidarity by laying flowers at the monastery's gates. And the 50 parishioners that were attending mass daily inside the Monastery are holding public prayer sessions outside the gates.

The community's frustration stems from Bishop Olson's decision to suspend daily Mass and confession for the nuns due to their ongoing civil lawsuit against him.

In a letter to Bishop Olson, the nuns expressed their distress over the situation and requested the restoration of Mass, confessions, and public access.

Bishop Olson, in response, cited the nuns' hindrance of his investigation and incitement of hatred against him as reasons for his decision.

He argued that the matter should be determined by a church's legal process rather than the state.

The investigation

The core of the dispute revolves around an allegation made by Bishop Olson against Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes.

He accused her of admitting to adultery with a priest from another diocese years ago. And turned it into a full-scale investigation of the Carmelite order.

However, Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes, who is in poor health and connected to a feeding tube, vehemently denies these allegations.

And locals claim that if she did “confess” to the Bishop why is he publicly outing her “so-called sin.”

The Fort Worth Diocese released a decree which appears to appoint Olson as the Pope's representative, further supporting their stance.

Attorney Mathew Bobo, representing the nuns, raised concerns about the validity of the decree.

He pointed out discrepancies in the case number and year, as well as the failure to deliver the decree to the nuns' canon lawyer, as required by canon law.

Motive

Bobo also suggested that Bishop Olson may have an interest in the financial records of the nuns, which the church does not have access to. Speculation has arisen that Olson may also covet the valuable 50-acre land on which the monastery sits. And he may be interested in the legacy donations and proceeds from the nun's online store.

Sheila Johnson, a supporter of the nuns, expressed her belief that Bishop Olson desires the property, despite articles of incorporation indicating that it would likely be given to another order of nuns if the Arlington group were to dissolve.

Johnson accused Olson of unbecoming behavior unbecoming of a member of the clergy and emphasized the support for the nuns within the community.

The scandal reached its climax when the Vatican seemingly sided with Bishop Olson's investigation, finding Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes guilty of violating her vow of chastity with a priest from outside the Fort Worth Diocese.

The dismissal of Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes from the Order of Discalced Carmelites further escalated tensions between the nuns and the diocese. Through her attorney, Gerlach denied the allegations and admission attributed to her by the diocese.

The legal battle continues

As the legal battle continues, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns has publicly backed the nuns, advocating for the return of daily Mass to the monastery.

The auxiliary, with its more than 225 members, has supported the nuns for decades, providing assistance with groceries, feast day meals, and fundraising.

Natalie Strand, the outgoing president of the group, expressed her pride in standing behind the nuns in their fight against injustice.

Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes has thirty days to appeal the decision to the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of the Apostolic Life. The nuns and their supporters remain committed to fighting for their cause.

“They are going to fight to the last moment. And we're going to help them any way we can," Strand emphasized.

As the case unfolds, supporters rally behind the nuns, advocating for the restoration of their religious practices and justice in the face of what they perceive as an unjust situation.
