On Friday a still unidentified high-altitude object was tracked over northern Canada. And has been shot down over the Yukon in a joint operation with Canada.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder the North American Aerospace Defense Command spotted the high-altitude object over Alaska late Friday.
It was monitored by two U.S. F-22 aircraft over Alaska, then Canadian jets joined when the object crossed into Canadian airspace, he said.
According to Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand, the high-altitude object shot down about 100 miles from the Canada-U.S. over the waters in Alaska.
It was described as a “small, cylindrical silver-ish gray object about the size of a small car” that seemed to be floating at about 40,000 feet, a U.S. official said.
“Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled, and a U.S. F-22 successfully fired at the object,” Trudeau posted on Twitter. a U.S. F-22 shot it down with a sidewinder missile, Ryder said.
The U.S. Northern Command said that arctic weather, including wind chill and limited daylight, were factors in the search occurring on sea ice and that personnel was “adjusting recovery operations to maintain safety.”
