Challenging California’s Climate Mandates
In a bold move on Tuesday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, alongside the American Farm Bureau Federation and four other prominent groups, launched a legal battle against California. Their target? California’s recent implementation of corporate climate disclosure laws, a move they argue violates constitutional rights and oversteps state jurisdiction.
Constitutional Clash
The coalition of business heavyweights filed a lawsuit urging a California federal court to intervene and halt the enforcement of Senate Bills 253 and 261. These bills, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, compel corporations to disclose detailed climate data. However, the plaintiffs contend that such mandates infringe upon the First Amendment, clash with federal law, and disrupt the balance of federalism.
