OpenAI and Microsoft are entangled in multiple copyright infringement lawsuits. They are centered around allegations that their large language models (LLMs) were trained on content from various publications and books without the proper permissions.
The high-profile cases against AI training claim that the artists were not compensated for the use of their content.
One notable lawsuit, brought by The New York Times last year, demands accountability for “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages.”
OpenAI responded by requesting that the court dismiss the claims, arguing that the Times exploited a ChatGPT glitch that caused the AI to repeat its articles verbatim.
