Bitcoin Scam: U.S. Seizes $15 Billion in Historic Crypto Crackdown Linked to Cambodian Billionaire

Bitcoin scam

What happens when romance scams, forced labor, and billions in Bitcoin collide? You get a Bitcoin Scam so audacious it makes The Wolf of Wall Street look tame. In one of the largest crypto seizures in history, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confiscated 127,271 bitcoins, worth roughly $15 billion.

This was connected to a global “pig butchering” operation allegedly run by Cambodian billionaire Chen Zhi.

Prosecutors describe a sprawling web of deception stretching across Southeast Asia — fake investment apps, online romance traps, and trafficked workers forced to lure victims into fraudulent crypto schemes. DOJ officials called it “one of the largest investment frauds in history.”

The Alleged Bitcoin Scam Mastermind: Chen Zhi

Meet Chen Zhi, a businessman whose Prince Holding Group claimed to invest in real estate and finance across 30 countries. Behind the glossy corporate image, investigators allege, was a darker empire.

According to the indictment unsealed in New York, Zhi’s network operated scam compounds” in Cambodia — fenced-in facilities where trafficked laborers were forced to impersonate lovers online.

Victims believed they were chatting with romantic partners, but prosecutors say every message was part of a script designed to drain them of money and crypto.

“Victims thought they’d found a soulmate; instead, they met a script,” one investigator told reporters.

Zhi, who remains at large, is accused of laundering billions through shell companies and fake crypto exchanges that presented themselves as legitimate investment opportunities.

The DOJ’s $15 Billion Breakthrough

When the U.S. government seized 127,271 bitcoins, it didn’t just intercept a fortune — it struck a major blow against transnational crypto fraud. The scale is staggering: the seized assets are worth more than many countries’ gold reserves.

This seizure marks a turning point for law enforcement’s ability to track and recover stolen digital assets. “This isn’t just a digital heist,” said one DOJ spokesperson. “It’s old-school organized crime with a crypto twist.”

Justice or Overreach?

For many in the crypto world, the case is both a victory and a warning. Traders see it as proof that crypto is “cleaning house,” while others fear growing government control. If the DOJ can seize billions from private wallets, what’s next for decentralized finance?

The irony isn’t lost on investors: Bitcoin was designed to be untouchable, yet it’s now a courtroom exhibit in a massive federal case. “The U.S. didn’t just seize coins,” wrote one analyst on X. “It seized confidence — and the myth that Bitcoin lives outside the system.”

Global Fallout and What Comes Next

The investigation has turned global eyes toward Southeast Asia, where more “pig butchering” operations are believed to be operating under new names. The U.S. Treasury’s sanctions on Prince Group could be the first step in a broader crackdown targeting Asian OTC exchanges and crypto firms with loose KYC policies.

Meanwhile, South Korea is taking crypto culture in a wildly different direction — turning crypto trading into an official esports competition, as reported by CoinDesk.

What began as one billionaire’s alleged con has evolved into a global compliance chess match, with regulators and scammers locked in a high-stakes game for control of the blockchain frontier.
