When Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb began studying the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, he didn’t just describe it as another comet or asteroid passing through the solar system. He called it a messenger. That word choice has sparked a broader scientific conversation: if nature can send objects between stars, could humanity one day use similar means to send messages of our own across the galaxy?

Objects like 3I/ATLAS — the third known interstellar visitor detected after ‘Oumuamua (1I/2017 U1) and Borisov (2I/2019 Q4) — travel through interstellar space for millions of years before crossing into other star systems. They are not bound to the Sun, and their hyperbolic orbits prove they came from beyond. As Loeb and others have pointed out, such objects could serve as natural couriers of information, whether created intentionally or not.

In the case of 3I/ATLAS, Loeb’s analysis highlights several unusual features: its brightness variations, non-gravitational acceleration, and distinct anti-tail jet structure that doesn’t behave like ordinary comets. These same factors, he argues, are precisely what make it an ideal example of what an engineered messenger might look like if it were ever built.

For humanity, the idea of harnessing interstellar motion is still theoretical but not entirely out of reach. Scientists already know how to alter the trajectories of small objects using solar sails, gravitational assists, and thermal propulsion. In principle, those same techniques could one day be used to guide small, durable payloads out of the solar system — effectively turning them into data-bearing interstellar messengers.

The concept isn’t new. NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 probes, launched in 1977, each carry a “Golden Record” — a gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images from Earth. Both spacecraft are now beyond the heliopause, making them the first human-made objects to enter interstellar space. Unlike Voyager, however, a natural object such as 3I/ATLAS doesn’t require fuel or propulsion to travel between stars — it’s already doing so.

That fact alone has led some researchers to consider the possibility of attaching micro-instruments or reflective identifiers to outbound asteroids or comets, allowing them to carry encoded information indefinitely through space. Such a project would rely entirely on physics and materials science we already understand: stability, radiation shielding, and long-term data preservation.

The challenge is control. Humanity can’t currently steer or predict the paths of interstellar-bound objects with precision. But as our tracking systems and observation networks improve, scientists suggest that the same monitoring tools used to study 3I/ATLAS could one day help us identify suitable candidates for future “message vehicles.”

In a recent update, Avi Loeb wrote that objects like 3I/ATLAS give us “a glimpse into the traffic flow between stars.” If these visitors are naturally occurring, they may already carry dust, ice, or organic materials from distant planetary systems — evidence of how information travels naturally through the cosmos. And if they can carry such materials, there’s no physical reason why a human-made signal, engraving, or microscopic archive couldn’t survive the same journey.

While the concept remains speculative, the underlying physics is real. Interstellar objects already move freely between solar systems, and humanity already knows how to encode and preserve information. The remaining step — combining those two facts — could, in time, transform how civilization communicates across the stars.

As Loeb has repeatedly emphasized, science must remain grounded in evidence. But in studying 3I/ATLAS, humanity is not only learning about what enters our solar system — it is also glimpsing the potential for what we could one day send outward.
