Larry Summers is stepping back from public life after newly released congressional transcripts revealed years of email exchanges between the former Treasury secretary and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The disclosures have shaken Harvard University, where Summers is a high-profile Democrat, prominent economist and former president. Long-standing concerns over Epstein’s influence among powerful academic and political figures have been reignited.

Summers Expresses Shame at Jeffrey Epstein Relationship

Following the release of emails by the House Oversight Committee, Summers acknowledged that he continued communicating with Jeffrey Epstein from 2012 to 2019—years after Epstein’s conviction for sex crimes involving minors.

In mid-November, Summers issued a public statement saying he is deeply ashamed and will take leave from Harvard while fulfilling core teaching duties.
He added:
“I take full responsibility for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein… I will be stepping back from public commitments as one part of my broader effort.”

Disturbing Emails and Professional Fallout

Among the most controversial exchanges, Summers asked Epstein for advice on pursuing a significantly younger Chinese economist, writing that she “finds me invaluable and interesting,” and asking how he could “get her to conclude she can’t have it without romance/sex.” These comments stunned colleagues and critics.
